Handel's Concerti Grossi opus 6 must surely be ranked as some of the greatest orchestral music ever composed. Probably penned in or around 1739, the pieces were developed to serve as orchestral "interludes" for other operatic or oratorio performances. To listen to them, however, is to tempt us not believe that this could possibly be the case: the Concerti Grossi opus 6 works are without doubt among the pinnacle of Baroque composition. After listening to these, we are left with a distinct sadness that Handel did not turn his attention more to this genre, as his masterful treatment in the opus 6 shows us his true genius.

Eclectic, diverse or just plain odd - three descriptions to describe the coupling of Carl Orff, Ludwig van Beethoven and George Gershwin on a single release. Of course, in reality what we have are three different LP releases of modest length from the early/mid 70's all conducted by the young Michael Tilson-Thomas with his presence on the podium the single unifying thread.

Dario Marianelli and Joe Wright worked together on box office hit “Pride and Prejudice” (2005) and when Director Joe Wright heard Víkingur’s Glass interpretations, he immediately thought of him as the perfect pianist for Marianelli’s score. Víkingur Ólafsson is an established Deutsche Grammophon newcomer, signed to DG in 2016 and wowing audiences with his debut album Philip Glass - Piano Works since then. Víkingur is playing the music on this soundtrack, composed by Dario Marianelli (17 out of 19 tracks).

Rachmaninov allegedly considered The Bells to be his best work, and it is not difficult to hear why. Written in 1913, it has a freshness of invention that is irresistible. Perhaps the text (an adaptation of an Edgar Allan Poe poem) struck a chord with this composer's sensibilities: different bells symbolize different facets of existence. The piece deserves more frequent airing, and it is to be hoped that Mikhail Pletnev and his Russian forces help raise awareness of it. The soloists are superb (Mescheriakova is particularly impressive), but the real star is the Moscow State Chamber Choir. This is a worthy companion to Pletnev's accounts of Rachmaninov orchestral works.
