Always happy to present an artist who is actually still with us and in fact is also still recording some very fine blues albums to this day! Dion DiMucci, better known as Dion was born in New York in 1939 and would find early fame with his doo wop/r&b/pop band Dion & The Belmonts featured here with two albums on our classic 2CD set. Across his band and solo careers during the early fifties and sixties Dion had almost 40 hits, and we are glad to say they are all featured here. From teen idol to folk singer to singer songwriter to seasoned blues perfomer, Dion has had a hell of a musical life. And long may he continue. First famous for the hits he had as a teen with the Belmonts, "The Wanderer" and "Ruby Baby" were covers that established Dion as a solo star in the late '50s, while "Runaround Sue" and "Lovers Who Wander," which he co-wrote, revealed a songwriting talent that would flourish over the years. DiMucci kept recording after the British Invasion changed the rock & roll landscape of the '60s, but he didn't have another big hit until the bittersweet "Abraham, Martin and John" in 1968, a single that introduced a period as an idiosyncratic singer/songwriter, an era encapsulated on the 1975 cult classic Born to Be with You.

Bridging the era between late-'50s rock and the British Invasion, Dion DiMucci (born July 18, 1939) was one of the top white rock singers of his time, blending the best elements of doo wop, teen idol, and R&B styles. Some revisionists have tried to cast him as a sort of early blue-eyed soul figure, although he was probably more aligned with pop/rock, at first as the lead singer of the Belmonts, and then as a solo star. Drug problems slowed him down in the mid-'60s, yet he made some surprisingly interesting progressions into blues-rock and folk-rock as the decade wore on, culminating in a successful comeback in the late '60s, although he was unable to sustain its commercial and artistic momentum for long.

This completes our set of Dion's Warner Bros studio albums, compiled 2 on 1 with three very hard-to-get bonus tracks. This finds Dion at his most wistful and mellow.

During the fifties rock 'n' roll explosion many vocal groups walked into the stu-dio off the street where many had performed to create their sound. New York's poorer street corners like the ones in the Bronx were home predominantly to black and Italian communities that would like to socialise and vocalise. There were already several R&B vocal groups that found success from both the east and west coasts during the fifties. Apart from the odd one hit wonders there was only one white group to make the big time alongside The Platters, The Drifters and The Coasters. That group being Dion And The Belmonts. These 'Extended Play' sides will evoke nostalgic memories, not only from the music of the day but fond memories of the EP's they came from.

Given the constrictions that bind most artists to their public persona, Dion's reinvention of himself in the early years of the 70s in both his music and his message, is a remarkable achievement. Over the course of four albums, Sit Down Old Friend, You're Not Alone, Sanctuary and Suite For Late Summer, released between 1970 and 1972, the singer and songwriter completely redefined the expressive potential of his own music.
