I grew up with Placido Domingo. Not in the sense of being boyhood friends, but rather in the sense that he was part of my "Golden Age" at the Metropolitan Opera. Of the "Three Tenors" (more Marketing hype than useful grouping of three fine singers) Domingo was the most dramatic - the "heaviest" of the three. His repertoire extended well beyond the lyric - and that's why this collection is not all the "essential" Domingo, but rather offers an interesting look at the lighter, more lyric side of Placido Domingo. You won't find Lohengrin or Otello here, but you will find many of the more lyric tenor arias from Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti - to name a few.

This 2CD 'Very Best Of' collection features Placido Domingo performing a wide selection of arias taken from works by Mozart, Handel, Puccini, Verdi and many more. Plácido Domingo has effectively and prolifically recorded for a number of labels, both "major" and "minor." For any one of them to come forward with a package purporting to be The Very Best of Plácido Domingo is presupposing a lot. Although a few of the recordings in this two-disc compilation come from the early '70s, the vast majority are late-career performances from the 1980s and 1990s. Domingo took care of his instrument longer than practically any other male singer in the late twentieth century; that said, this two-disc set is not so much Domingo's "very best" as it is some of the better performances from a period where he was a little past his prime.

He became established quickly as one of the greatest lyric tenors of his time, and one who could also sing dramatic tenor roles with nearly equally fine results. Domingo's forays into Latin and pop music were also successful, earning him Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards as well as silver, gold, platinum, and multi-platinum-selling albums. As his voice deepened with age in the 2010s, he continued to perform as a baritone. Born March 21, 1941, in Madrid, Spain, Domingo's parents were both singers in the zarzuela, Spain's distinctive national form of musical theater. His family relocated to Mexico in 1950; there he studied vocal technique, as well as piano and conducting, at the Mexico City Conservatory.
