Jim Hall was the winner of the 1998 Jazzpar Prize, given annually by the Danish Jazz Center; the resulting concerts which followed are a valuable addition to Hall's considerable discography. The veteran guitarist is joined by tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Thomas Ovesen and drummer Terry Clarke for a rousing "Stella By Starlight" and a very soft, captivating interpretation of "Chelsea Bridge." The Zaploski String Quartet takes the place of Hall's group on several tracks, joining him for his intriguing "Thesis," written in 1953 while he was a student at the Cleveland Institute of Music; this version is more stripped down than his 1990 Town Hall performance but every bit as compelling. Hall & Co. join the string quartet for a run through Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze," proving he's as open minded as ever to trying new things.

In Klingra, Afenginn’s composer and bandleader Kim Rafael Nyberg has crafted a gentle yet fervent post-classical exploration into the temperament of intertwined cycles. Both the music and poetry (in Faroese) are composed by using interlocked cyclical patterns. Like the gears in a clock the parallel themes intersect at points, creating contracted dissonance or lifting consonance. The overarching experience is deeply contemplative and melancholic, with a light of emancipation always just ahead.

Genre: Classical / Label: Alba

Kamus Quartet, which has been awarded with a Finnish Emma Award for the best classical music album of the year and Finnish National Broadcasting Company's Record of the Year recognition, release a beautiful Baltic-themed album "For The Baltic Sea" in collaboration with the Baltic Sea Action Group. The new publication of the string quartet will feature compositions by composers from the Baltic Sea environment - Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The quartet consists of violinists Terhi Paldanius and Jukka Untamala, viola player Jussi Tuhkanen and cellist Petja Kainulainen. The Baltic Sea is a unique sea with a salinity ranging from the almost fresh water of the Gulf of Bothnia to the high salinity of the Danish straits. Therefore, the Baltic Sea is home to a special combination of both freshwater species and marine organisms that have adapted to their habitats. For centuries, the species of the Baltic Sea have had to face nutrient loads from the land and various harmful substances, which has led to, among other things, eutrophication and other serious problems. Climate change is exacerbating the problems. Curbing eutrophication and climate change, as well as protecting the unique species, is essential for rescuing the Baltic Sea. Founded in 2008, the Baltic Sea Action Group aims to restore the Baltic Sea to good ecologi-cal status in changing environmental conditions, focusing in particular on the promotion of Baltic Sea and cli-mate-friendly measures in agriculture and the protection of underwater biodiversity.

Emil Hartmann (1836-1898) had a heavy family heritage to lift, being the son of one of the true greats in Danish music life, the composer and organist J.P.E. Hartmann. In Denmark, Emil Hartmann had difficulty freeing himself from his father’s shadow, but in Germany, things were easier. On this release, Elisabeth Zeuthen Schneider and friends delve into his chamber musical key works, providing the perfect showcase for the romantic flair of Emil Hartmann, making his lines sing beautifully and virtuosic passages dance, and finding intimacy and eloquence at telling moments.

Composer Niels Gade ( 1817-1890) is considered to be the most influential Danish musician of his time. He was also a successful teacher, conductor, violinist, and organist. This release is the second volume in the exploration of Gade’s chamber music, and includes his String Quartet in E minor with extra movements, the first movement of a Piano Trio in B-flat major, and Scherzo in C sharp minor for Piano Quintet. “Even in the intricate texture the individual voices remain transparent; the focus on what is essential is more important than everything experimental. The MidtVest ensemble relies on flowing lines, not on leaden ritardandi, on well-rounded formulations instead of roughly delineated blocks.” (FonoForum of Vol. 1).
