Jazz / Swing / Saxophone

The Alternative Takes series is of immense value to consumers of the "French Classics" CD series. These are alternate takes in chronological order of historic jazz (and some blues) with a strong representation of the swing era. The Alternative Takes: 1935-1945 contains 25 Bud Freeman tracks on a single disc including multiple takes of "You Took Advantage of Me," "What's the Use?," and "Memories of You." While the disc is definitely directed toward collectors, anyone with an interest in this period of jazz will also enjoy it.

Amazon Review by Maknight
I dont normally purchase anything with the words "Rock N Roll" in the title, although I dont mind some Rock n Roll music, it is not my music of choice. Having said that the track listings on this CD pushed me into thinking this could be more R&B than R&R, with the likes of Ruth Brown, Titus Turner) and it was enough to make me take a gamble and buy (you have to do things now and again). I also looked at other reviews on the other compilations in this series,(Heavy Sugar, Sassy Sugar) and decided to buy. And what an excellent decison it was, It is packed with 3 CDs worth of R&B/R&R tracks. you could argue whether some are actually R&B, rather than R&R but, whatever camp your musical tastes lie in, this CD is brilliant, of course some of the tracks are out and out Rock and Roll(the Bay Bops for instance- with that Doo Wop style of track), but the majority are pure listening pleasure.

For anyone in their mid-teens in the mid-5Os, and into music, it had to be rock'n'roll - American rock'n roll. There was no British equivalent to the sound. In the UK, it was Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Platters, Alan Freed, Radio Luxembourg, Voice Of America. If the right people get to know about this and hear the quality, this will sell and sell.

Jazz / Swing / Tenor Saxophone

This is a comprehensive collection with countless pivotal sessions. It features 203 separate recordings on seven CDs and collects both the sessions led by Chu Berry and other sessions where he contributed significantly as a sideman. You can study his remarkable surefootedness as a soloist; remember an era where evolution in the music was running rampant and Chu Berry's tenor saxophone was one of the things making it run.
