As the '70s came to a close, so would the tenure of the original Patti Smith Group. Following the 1979 release of their fourth album, Wave, Smith and her newlywed husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith (MC5), relocated to Detroit, where she would spend most of the decade in semi-retirement while raising a family. Král would go on to work with Iggy Pop, compose music for a number of independent films, and record a number of solo works in his native Czech Republic. Sohl returned to record with Smith on her 1988 solo album, Dream of Life, before suffering a fatal heart attack in 1990. Since the mid-'90s, Smith's longtime creative foils Kaye and Daugherty, along with late-period bassist Tony Shanahan, have served as her primary band, and even though the Patti Smith Group name would no longer appear on album covers, they have remained her closest collaborators on-stage and in the studio.

Few contemporary artists have been as significant as Pulitzer Prize and GRAMMY Award winner Christopher Rouse, whose imaginative approach made him one of the most frequently performed composers during his lifetime. The Concerto for Orchestra is a ‘hyper-concerto’ that gives each player a chance to shine, while the mournful intimacy and passion of Supplica unfolds somewhat like the slow movement of a Bruckner or Mahler symphony. Rouse’s Fifth Symphony fondly recalls Beethoven’s mighty Fifth but blurs the lines between tradition and modernity, transporting the listener from turbulence to serenity. It was described as “brilliant, exciting and at times hauntingly beautiful” in The Dallas Morning News.

This hard-boogie Southern Rock sextet defined the genre in the '70s along with Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers. They were harder, wilder, funkier, and often raunchier than their like-minded contemporaries. This two-disc set includes their 1970 Top 40 hit "Jim Dandy", and the '76 standout "Strong Enough To Be Gentle", and many more…

Boy, talk about a return to form. Black Oak Arkansas' first new album in over ten years is easily the best thing they've done since their '70s heyday. This record reunites the men who formed the band way back in 1963, frontman extraordinaire Jim Dandy (prime exponent of "Dandyism"), rhythm guitarist Rickie Lee Reynolds, and bassman Dirty Daugherty. The chemistry that is still there is amazing.

Erik Chisholm is a Scottish-born composer and friend of Bartók whose music has experienced a substantial revival. It's not quite correct to call him a Scottish composer, for the last two decades of his life were spent outside Scotland (mostly in South Africa), and Scottish nationalism is only one of the unique mix of influences in his music. It's not that he's "eclectic" in the modern sense.

Nearly 30 years and nine albums in, Patti Smith shows no signs of giving up, or giving in, despite the fact she expected to be quietly doing her work instead of making rock & roll albums and playing in front of audiences. But then 9/11, Afghanistan, war in Iraq. Smith lives the vocation of a poet in an old-world sense of that word…

She'd been a New Yorker since moving to the city in 1967, aged 21. She had a child that she gave up for adoption, met and started a relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe - with whom she shared a room at the infamous Chelsea Hotel for some time - and she discovered the work of French symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud. She appeared in Warhol Superstar Jackie Curtis's play Femme Fatale with Wayne County, and - for one night only - in Cowboy Mouth which she co-wrote with Sam Shepherd. She was considered for the role of lead vocalist in Blue Oyster Cult, but instead contributed lyrics to many of the band's songs, and she started a relationship with BOC keyboardist Alan Lanier. She contributed articles to rock journals Rolling Stone and Creem.
