David Bowie was not a" rock legend " like the others. Going through decades and fashions like this has always given Bowie the status of an innovator, a singular artist who manages to perpetually reinvent himself, to challenge himself as well… Whether glam, new wave, funk or soul, disco or electro, David Bowie has embraced all genres; sometimes even one step ahead. From Major Tom to Ziggy Stardust, from Aladdin Sane to Thin White Duke, he invented and reinvented himself, metamorphosed and showed off his body turned show. Body he made travel to the four corners of the world, from London to New York through Berlin. A geographical, physical, intellectual, dense and quite fascinating route that has made David Bowie an icon of the world of modern culture and a pioneer of pop. An icon playing on an assumed androgyny for, not to say claimed.

After performing his second-to-last selection, "White Light/White Heat," a tune by Lou Reed, the songwriter who most influenced Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie's enduring and indelible persona, Bowie dropped this little nugget on his fans (and bandmates): "Not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that we'll ever do. Thank you." He then went into a magnificent version of "Rock & Roll Suicide," a song that gives a glimpse of where Bowie could have gone, not to suicide, but to the style of rock & roll that a long-term band can provide. Had Bowie kept the Spiders from Mars together, unique flashes like the version of "Let's Spend the Night Together" or the striking "All the Young Dudes would have continued, a tight little rock & roll band providing a balance that dissipated when the artist branched out on his own.

David Bowie returned to relatively conventional rock & roll with Scary Monsters, an album that effectively acts as an encapsulation of all his '70s experiments. Reworking glam rock themes with avant-garde synth flourishes, and reversing the process as well, Bowie creates dense but accessible music throughout Scary Monsters…

Newly remastered of the 1987 album. The seeds of this new reimagining of the albums were first sown in 2008 when David asked Mario McNulty to remix the track ‘Time Will Crawl’ and record new drums by longtime Bowie drummer, Sterling Campbell along with strings. The track was issued on the iSelect compilation to much acclaim, and in the notes, for that record, David remarked ‘Oh, to redo the rest of that album’.

Ace’s odyssey through time and space to bring you this compilation has taken almost as long as the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. The 40th anniversary of the moon landing had yet to be celebrated when this CD was first scheduled for lift-off. It has taken a fair old while to get to the launching pad, but we haven’t Saturn our backsides waiting for mission control to clear us for lift-off. The Ace-tronauts of Steele Road never lost sight of their mission statement – which was to boldly go where no CD of its type had gone before; maybe even to The Final Frontier as far as space-themed compilations go. Nearly five years after the final countdown first began, we are ready for the blast off! “Greatest Hits From Outer Space” offers a stellar collection of music that can truthfully be said to be nothing less than out of this world. Whether you live on Jupiter or in Jesmond, on Venus or in Ventnor, on Pluto or in Prestwich, Ace’s lab-coated boffins have bet their moonboots that, unlike Houston, you won’t have a problem in enjoying this voyage around the galaxy of space-related music. We don’t claim to be definitive in our quest – to be so would require a boxed set, at least – but we do feel that we’ve left no moon rock unturned in an attempt to bring you the best selection of space-related music ever to orbit around your CD player.

Conversation Piece effectively amounts to an exhaustive documentation of David Bowie becoming David Bowie over the course of 1968 and 1969. The five-disc box - which is packaged in a handsome, hefty hardcover book - collects a series of home demos, many released in a series of limited-edition vinyl box sets over the course of 2019, plus two mixes of David Bowie (aka Space Oddity), the 1969 album that brought him into the public eye. Strictly speaking, there aren't many unheard tracks here. Everything from the Spying Through a Keyhole, Clareville Grove Demos, and The "Mercury" Demos sets are here, along with a brand-new mix of the Space Oddity album by Tony Visconti, one that restores "Conversation Piece" as part of its sequence. Setting aside the new mix of Space Oddity, that leaves 11 tracks out of 75 that are making their debut here…

R.I.P. David Bowie, music’s greatest innovator has died at age of 69.
The first in a series of career-spanning comprehensive box sets, Five Years 1969-1973 chronicles the beginning of David Bowie's legend by boxing all of his officially released music during those early years. This amounts to six studio albums – 1969's David Bowie (aka Space Oddity); 1970's The Man Who Sold the World; 1971's Hunky Dory; 1972's The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars; Aladdin Sane, and Pin Ups (both from 1973); a pair of live albums (Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture Soundtrack and Live in Santa Monica '72, both released long after these five years) and a two-CD collection of non-LP tracks called Re:Call, plus Ken Scott's 2003 mix of Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust. That list suggests how "officially released" is a guideline that's easily bent.
