Classical / Renaissance / Vocals / Lute

Following her debut release of Baroque works by Vivaldi and Handel earlier this year, Grace Davidson returns to disc on Signum with an intimate disc of Dowland’s first book of lute songs, accompanied by David Miller. Blending melancholy with wit in his writing for both lute and voice, John Dowland’s songs have continued to enchant audiences and singers for nearly 400 years. The ‘First Booke’ includes some of Dowland’s less well-known works, and was recorded in the sensitive acoustic of Ascot Priory in Berkshire, UK.

Biber's Mystery (or Rosary) Sonatas were originally written to be played during Mass in Salzburg. Set to be recorded in early 2015 and released shortly after by Channel Classics, Rachel will tour a programme of half of the sonatas through 2014/2015 and 2015/2016. Depicting the main stories in the life of Christ, the sonatas are extremely evocative and could be performed in a sacred space using the Stations of the Cross, and/ or include suitable lighting to enhance the performance.

This 2-CD set puts together Vivaldi's all nine surviving cello sonatas. Vivaldi may have composed more sonatas for cello for all we know, but this is all we have left. And it is a wonderful legacy, although less known than his violin concertos, for example. Compared with the violin concertos, many of which sound rather run-off-the-mill, these sonatas sound more thoughtful and meditative.
