Ha venticinque anni, è l’erede di molte miniere di carbone in Galles, la madre londinese è una regina di cuori nell’alta società, il padre fiorentino è in continua fuga da tribunali e amanti imbrogliate. Laureato a Cambridge in letteratura medievale, si chiama George Glenville per l’impero britannico e Giorgio Del Bello per il Regno d’Italia. A fine maggio del 1940 a lui si rivolge Winston Churchill, appena nominato alla guida del governo di sua maestà, per recapitare una lettera segretissima a Mussolini. Il primo ministro inglese propone al duce un patto di mutua assistenza pur restando fieri nemici. George effettua la consegna al termine di una rocambolesca partita a tennis sul campo di villa Torlonia, la residenza romana della famiglia Mussolini.
