A 2017 remaster of Rock St. Trop, the fascinating 1969 collaboration between The Pretty Things and Philippe Debarge (an eccentric wealthy playboy from France).
In late August 1969, Phil May and Wally Waller were flown to St. Tropez by Philippe Debarge and taken to the DeBarge family estate - a magnet for the rich and famous of the era, from politicians to film and rock stars. DeBarge had serious money and wanted to make a serious album, with him as front man. Philippe had done his research and knew exactly who he wanted to make that album with The Pretty Things…

Motown considered this Michigan family to be the heirs apparent to the Jacksons; they even let them write, produce and arrange their songs (a luxury they did not afford the Jacksons). Here are the four LPs born of that fruitful relationship, all in print for the first time in years, plus remixes and unissued versions of their key dance cuts and ballads. The Debarges ('81) and the Top 40 LPs All This Love ('82), in a Special Way ('83) and Rhythm of the Night ('85) include the R&B hits Stop! Don't Tease Me; I Like It; All This Love; Time Will Reveal; Rhythm of the Night; Who's Holding Donna Now; Love Me in a Special Way; You Wear It Well; the Heart Is Not So Smart, and more, and you also get extended, instrumental and alternate mixes of their biggest hits!

This was the last of the four albums El DeBarge recorded as a solo artist. Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds was the main producer but because of El's talents as an arranger and musician this album avoided the cookie cutter production tricks of Babyface. It's an album primarily of uptempo songs three stand outs: "Where You Are", "I'll Be There" and Starlight, Moonlight, Candelight. One of the two true funky dance tracks, "Slide" is a true Chicago steppin type of song. El's beatiful falestto voice on the slow jams "You Got the Love I Want and "You Are My Dream" reminds you of his late brother Robert "Bobby" DeBarge gorgeous voice. My favorite, the Cd's title track is the deeply spirtual and a tip of the hat to Marvin Gaye, "Heart, Mind.& Soul". This brotha is an underated singer, songwriter, and producer. I highly recommend downloading the entire Cd, you want be disappointed.
