In 1974, Deep Purple were proving detractors wrong who figured that the exit of both singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover a year earlier would lead the group into an artistic tailspin. But as it turned out, newcomers David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes were worthy replacements, who contributed significantly to two more Purple classics in a single-year span, Burn and Stormbringer. And the "new look Purple" was certainly capable of delivering the goods during their live performances that year, as evidenced by the 2011 archival release, Live in London 1974. Expectedly, the track listing is comprised of then-new tunes (a red hot, set-opening reading of Burn's title track, as well as "Might Just Take Your Life," etc.), plus classics ("Smoke on the Water," "Space Truckin'," etc.).

This live set taped at the Kilburn State Gaumont in London on May 22nd 1974 by the BBC, who found it easier to record a concert from the tour rather then get the band into the studio as in previous years.
Since it was first broadcast, this recording has remained an (officially) unheard but much demanded item amongst Mk III Deep Purple funs. Rather hastily mixed at the time for an experimental broadcast in quadrophonic on June 6th 1974 the tapes have here been completely remixed, whilst special cutting had enabled us to include almost an hour of unedited music in its original running order - only the rather over-long set closer Space Truckin` being omitted.

Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. The band is considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although their musical approach changed over the years. Originally formed as a progressive rock band, the band shifted to a heavier sound in 1970. FEW BANDS CAN BOAST OF A CAREER OF MORE THAN 35 YEARS AND FEWER STILL CAN BE SEEN AS INFLUENTIAL AND RELEVANT TODAY, BUT DEEP PURPLE, "COME HELL OR HIGH WATER" HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REINVENT THEMSELVES TIME AND AGAIN SO THAT THEY ARE NOW TRULY WONDERFUL TO WITNESS IN CONCERT. The Deep Purple saga has taken many twists and turns over the years, and thankfully, since 1994 it appears to have taken a permanent turn for the better. This 2 CD set is a stunning document of the band getting to grips with their heritage and embracing the future with an energy that you would be more likely to see coming from a band who have been around for 35 weeks. As always, the musicianship is spectacular, but now you can listen to a live album that is a worthy successor to Made In Japan, and re-acquaint yourself to a band that you might recently have overlooked.
