With their 1978 eponymous debut, Van Halen simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefined what the electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects that mimicked the sounds of machines and animals. It was wildly inventive and over the top, equaled only by vocalist David Lee Roth, who brought the role of a metal singer to near-performance art standards. Roth wasn't blessed with great technique, unlike Eddie, but he had a flair for showmanship derived as much from lounge performers as Robert Plant. Together, they made Van Halen into the most popular American rock & roll band of the late '70s and early '80s, and in the process set the template for hard rock and heavy metal for the '80s. Throughout the '80s, it was impossible not to hear Van Halen's instrumental technique on records that ranged from the heaviest metal to soft pop.

The Long Island-based quintet Dream Theater are, in the 21st century, the standard bearers of progressive metal. My first band, a College band that was formed in Birmingham UK back in 1978 when I was 18 years of age and the band ran through to 1980 During that time the band gigged and recorded many songs in demo format on a teac reel to reel machine. Some songs were covers to get us out on the road, some self penned by Tim Dunn and Rick Lambe mainly although, Robert Smith contributed a couple of works.

Born in 1956 in Massa, Italy, Roberto Zanetti studied piano at the age of 14. Had his first hit in 1978: Souvenir, with the band Santarosa, which sold 200,000 copies in Italy. In 1983 he launched his own group, Taxi (with Zucchero "Sugar" Fornaciari) and released the single To Miami. He had chosen the Savage alias based on the comic character Doc Savage and composed one of the most popular Italo-Disco slow tracks: Don't Cry Tonight.
