"Neeme Järvi was one of the busiest stars on the international conducting scene. (…) From the early '60s, Järvi took a leading role in the musical life of his homeland. In 1963 he assumed the directorship of the Estonian Radio & Television Orchestra, his first important post. He also founded the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, and for 13 years was the chief conductor of Opera House Estonia in Tallinn. From 1976 to 1980 he was chief conductor and artistic director of the Estonian State Symphony Orchestra, then in its infancy. By the late 1970s his fame had spread throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and he received favorable notices for his appearances in the West…

"The set also includes two magnificent Kubelík recordings from the 1960s with Bavarian Radio forces. Schoenberg's Gurrelieder (with tenor Herbert Schachtschneider as a vocally heroic Waldemar) is superbly played and sung, and Kubelík's conducting is as dramatically involving as any. It sounds better than ever in this latest mastering. Finally, there is utter enchantment: the 1964 recording of Mendelssohn's music for "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (with Edith Mathis and Ursula Boese as soloists), prefaced by a fascinating rehearsal of the Overture, released here for the first time. The booklet includes excellent notes and photographs" ~International Record Review

"…Giulini's conducting incorporates elements of Furtwängler's and Toscanini's styles. His dynamism and purity of sound are reminiscent of Toscanini, but the spacious, Romantic approach reminds one of Furtwängler. His particular attentiveness to inner voices results in a rich sound. Giulini eschews podium theatrics or autocratic attitudes. Instead, he approaches the musicians as co-workers serving the music…"

By the time the maestro died in 1989, the CD had finally replaced the LP as the primary sound carrier, yet he was realistic enough to know that the pioneering early stages of the digital era would be followed by further technical development. This is reflected in Karajan Gold.

This 5CD set features the then Deutsche Grammophon "house fiddler" in brilliant performances of Vivaldi, Tartini, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Martin Violin Concertos. In some of my previous reviews of box sets in the OM series, I have been critical of what the powers that be at UNI have done in terms of their selection of material, but here they got it almost perfect.
