Violinist Didier Lockwood tackled a formidable task by dedicating an entire CD to the legendary violinist Stephane Grappelli, who died just shy of his 90th birthday in December, 1997. Although Grappelli's influence on his playing is obvious at times, he is no carbon copy. He generally has a darker tone and doesn't use nearly as many up-tempo runs. With two brilliant partners, bassist Niels Pedersen (who worked with Grappelli on a few dates) and guitarist Birelli Lagrene, Lockwood does a credible job.

The "Gypsy jazz" - also known as Gypsy swing - is an expression that is often said to be born with the guitarist Jean "Django" Reinhardt in the 30's. Because its origin is, to a large extent French, it is often referred to as "Gypsy Jazz" or "Manouche Jazz" even in English texts. Between 1930 and 1950, Django was at the head of a group of gypsy guitarists working in Paris and around.

In the early 90s, after experiencing numerous artistic and commercial success, especially with Jean Michel Jarre and Christopher Francis Dreyfus embarks on the adventure of jazz. To win from the start in this universe in which we did not necessarily expected, Francis Dreyfus sign big names: Steve Grossman, Marcus Miller, Roy Haynes, but also Richard Galliano, Biréli Lagrène, Michel Petrucciani and Eddy Louiss. 20 years later, Dreyfus Jazz has become a prestigious and must label.
