The young, already internationally successful Austrian baritone and ensemble member of the Munich Gärtnerplatztheater Daniel Gutmann presents songs by Robert Schumann based on poems by Heinrich Heine with Maximilian Kromer, piano, on this CD. In addition to Schumann's most popular song cycle, "Dichterliebe" Op. 48, from which the title of this album, "Tränenflut", is taken, this recording also finds the "Liederkreis" Op. 24 with it's nine songs enter this compilation. In addition, Gutmann and Kromer interpret with "Belshazzar", Op. 57, and "Die zwei Grenadiere", Op. 49/1, Schumann's settings of two of the German poet's best-known ballads.

The ultimate song cycle performed by two of today’s foremost lieder interpreters; this release is destined to become the reference recording for anyone interested in the great German song tradition. Baritone Florian Boesch’s eagerly - awaited second album on Linn presents Robert Schumann’s bestloved song cycle, Dichterliebe, Op. 48: sixteen poetic gems by Heinrich Heine which reflect on a poet’s idea of love and loss. Treated on equal terms, the piano plays a decisive role, adding extra layers whilst emphasiz ing and enhancing the text. The lesser - known Zwölf Gedichte von Justinus Kerner complete the programme. This recording reunites the exceptional partnership of Florian Boesch and leading song pianist Malcolm Martineau, whose previous Linn recording, Schuman n & Mahler: Lieder, won the 2019 BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award. Surely the lieder recording highlight of the year!

Following the successful album "Nicht Wiedersehen!", the internationally acclaimed bassist Günther Groissböck and one of the most distinguished pianists in his field, Malcolm Martineau, are now dedicating their new programme to the subject of love; under the title "Männerliebe und Leben" (Men's Love and Life), they explore love from a man's point of view - based on Schumann's well-known cycle "Frauenliebe und -leben" (Women's Love and Life). Beginning with what is probably the first song cycle in music history, "An die ferne Geliebte" by Ludwig van Beethoven, the well-rehearsed duo then present Schumann's "Dichterliebe". Three songs by Anton Bruckner ("Im April", "Herbstkummer" and "Mein Herz und deine Stimme") are preceded by other selected songs by Johannes Brahms, including "Wie bist du, meine Königin", "Unbewegte laue Luft", "Die Mainacht" and "Nicht mehr zu dir zu gehen".

After two Schubert albums, Mauro Peter has now turned intensively to the songs of Robert Schumann – a composer no less dear to him than Franz Schubert. In 2012 he won the Schumann Competition in Zwickau. “It is young, it is lyrical,” tenor Mauro Peter explains his deep connection with Schumann’s Dichterliebe. “I can relate to these feelings because they are familiar to me. The music is full of emotion and so incredibly heartfelt at the same time.”

The organ works of Axel Ruoff, born in Stuttgart in 1957, constitute one of the most important contributions to the literature for the instrument by any composer since Messiaen. Stylistically, his music unites the French cathedral tradition of composers like Langlais, Dupré and Guillou with the concern with counterpoint and logic heard in Reger and later German figures. Like Messiaen, Ruoff often finds stimulus in religious sources; unlike him, it is biblical narrative that inspires many of Ruoff’s works, and he uses the unparalleled resources of the modern symphonic organ in his responses to some of the most dramatic scenes in both Testaments, writing music of freewheeling energy and uncompromising power.

Even more than in Beethoven's case, Mendelssohn's Lieder were intended for performance in the salons of the prosperous bourgeoisie: a convivial circle of highly qualified connoisseurs who shared the same outlook, and often a similar financial status. Those members of the upper middle classes were the musical link and the sociological crossroads between Hausmusik and the concert hall. Mendelssohn often wrote songs as gifts for the friends he was visiting, frequently as settings of their own texts: the considerable technical challenges they contained still needed to be manageable for members of those circles.

Simon Keenlyside has the instrument, the technique, and the intelligence required of great lieder singers. His burnished baritone is large, but he can deploy it with tenderness, as well as power, and he has the flexibility to bring a broad array of colors to the songs' varied moods. This is especially impressive in Schumann's Dichterliebe, where the songs have an emotional arc with an implied narrative, and Keenlyside captures the mercurial shifts with passion and integrity. Even in a song as brief as "Ich grolle nicht," the subtlety of the lover's evolving feelings come across honestly and with precision.
