Dire Straits

UMC/Virgin has announced today, Mark Knopfler’s 71st birthday, that it will release a six-CD box set of all Dire Straits’ studio albums on October 9, 2020. Dire Straits – The Studio Albums 1978-1991 includes of all the seminal British band’s studio LPs released during that time, all of which are certified multi-platinum.

Dire Straits is the self-titled debut album by British rock band Dire Straits. Is released in October 1978 (see 1978 in music) by Phonogram Records. The single "Sultans of Swing" first broke the US Top Five early spring 1979 (being a hit a full five months after the album was released there) and then rose to #8 in the British charts. "Water of Love" was also released as a single in some countries, but only charted in Australia, reaching #54. In Europe, the album sold four million copies while in the U.S. it sold two million copies. The album was remastered and released with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 for most of the world outside the U.S. and on September 19, 2000 in the United States. For 2010 release of an anniversary album is planned. It will be devoted the 30 anniversary of the edition of a vinyl. The cover image is taken from a painting by Chuck Loyola, while the Dire Straits Fender icon was designed by Geoff Halpern.

A new CD and vinyl box set called Live 1978-1992 focuses on the live recordings of Dire Straits. These packages spotlight four main concerts (or live albums): Alchemy (1983), On The Night (1993), the Live at the BBC compilation from 1995 and Live from the Rainbow Theatre, a 1979 gig which is previously unreleased.

"Sultans of Swing" was the first single release of the British rock band Dire Straits; first released in 1978, its 1979 re-release caused it to become a U.K. and U.S. hit. The song was first recorded as a demo at Pathway Studios, North London in July 1977, and quickly acquired a following after it was put on rotation at Radio London. It did not take long for its popularity to reach record executives, and Dire Straits were offered a contract with Phonogram Records. The song was then re-recorded in early 1978 at Basing Street Studios for the band's debut album Dire Straits. The record company wanted a less-polished rock sound for the radio, so an alternative version was recorded at Pathway Studios in April 1978 and released as the single in some countries including the United Kingdom and Germany.

1979 was an amazing time for UK post-punk pop. t the end of March, a fresh new sound entered the British top 20. 'Sultans of Swing', a very wordy song with lots of driving guitar, a tight rhythm section and some killer musicianship.
