Out of print in the U.S.! Originally released in 1981, Songs of the Beatles finds the esteemed Jazz diva dipping into the Fab Four's back catalog and adding her own unique stamp to these already classic songs. Most Rock artists who have attempted to cover Beatles tunes have failed miserably at capturing the magic of the originals, yet there are some Jazz artists, like Vaughan, are able to practically reinvent the song and add a new musical spin to the proceedings. Of the 13 tracks, Sarah reinterprets 12 Lennon & McCartney-penned gems plus her amazing version of George Harrison's 'Something'. Other tracks include 'Eleanor Rigby', 'Blackbird', 'You Never Give Me Your Money', 'Get Back' and 'Fool on the Hill'.

The 1981 Jean-Jacques Beineix film Diva is a dizzying cornucopia of delights, with a strong sense of urban cool and a cast of characters whose alternating detachments and obsessions hint at the legacy of pain and loneliness that helped form them. Its score, composed by Vladimir Cosma, is inseparable from the film, which, after all, is about music itself, and the ways that it links to desire and longing. From the beautiful arias of Wilhemina Wiggins Fernandez (who plays an opera singer in the film) to the eerie, achingly beautiful instrumental pieces composed by Cosma to set the mood for images of rain-slicked streets, Taiwanese music pirates, teenaged Vietnamese thieves, jaded middle-aged art sages, motorbikes and car chases, the score for Diva remains one of Cosma's masterpieces, a perfect companion to a film that became an international underground hit.

One of France and Europe's most distinguished film composers, Vladimir Cosma scored more than 150 films and TV productions. Although he enjoyed almost immediate success in comedies, he continued to experiment with different styles and genres, and this versatility brought him wide international acclaim.

This 1980 recording is an excellent example of David Sanborn's music. The highly influential altoist is joined by familiar studio veterans (including guitarist Hiram Bullock and drummer Steve Gadd) with bassist/composer Marcus Miller being a key figure in creating the funky rhythms and colorful backgrounds. Miller, who shared the writing chores with Sanborn, not only contributed his powerful bass, but backed the altoist during a duet version of "Just for You" on piano. Easily recommended to fans of R&B-ish jazz.

A sumptuous two-disc set that brings together all three of Patti's albums for the Philadelphia International label from the 1980s. The Spirit's In It from 1981 features stellar performances of the title track, "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu," "Here You Come Again," and a powerful recut of "Over the Rainbow." Patti's second album, 1983's I'm In Love Again, spills across both discs, with the title track and a nice reading of "Lover Man" being the highlights. This anthology finishes out with 1985's Patti, an album of leftovers which nonetheless sports strong material in Bobby Womack's "Love Symphony," Gamble and Huff's "If You Don't Know Me By Now," "Shy," and the standard "Look to the Rainbow." An interesting chapter in this soul diva's career.

The 1980s were an epoch of upheaval and rapid change in South Africa. The decade began with the country’s apartheid government fighting to maintain its institutionalized racial segregation in the face of global protests and demands for the release of human rights activist Nelson Mandela, who had been jailed since the early 1960s. By 1990, Mandela was free, and apartheid was on the way to being dismantled.

When the self-described "disco queen" known as Sylvester stepped on a New York stage opening for Chaka Khan, the local press was entranced. One newspaper approvingly noted that he made "David Bowie look like Lawrence Welk." Nothing was too outrageous for Sylvester. But at his core, he was serious about music and about breaking down the walls of identity. In appearance and demeanor, the unapologetically gay San Francisco star challenged the gender binary long before such discussions were in the mainstream, going far beyond androgyny to create a striking persona all his own.

All The Great Hits is a compilation album by Diana Ross released in 1981, the second Motown compilation set to capitalize on the success of 1980's diana produced by Chic. Her duet "Endless Love" with Lionel Richie was from a movie with Brooke Shields and, just like 1980's "It's My Turn", had already been released as a single and on a soundtrack album. The double-album detailing Ross' career at Motown was released in the weeks preceding her RCA debut Why Do Fools Fall in Love and became her third album that year to reach the top 40 in the U.S. The album was certified Gold in the USA and Platinum in the UK.
