Django Reinhardt was the first hugely influential jazz figure to emerge from Europe – and he remains the most influential European to this day, with possible competition from Joe Zawinul, George Shearing, John McLaughlin, his old cohort Stephane Grappelli and a bare handful of others. A free-spirited gypsy, Reinhardt wasn't the most reliable person in the world, frequently wandering off into the countryside on a whim. Yet Reinhardt came up with a unique way of propelling the humble acoustic guitar into the front line of a jazz combo in the days before amplification became widespread.

Reinhardt's most popular compositions have become standards within gypsy jazz, including "Minor Swing", "Daphne", "Belleville", "Djangology", "Swing '42", and "Nuages". Jazz guitarist Frank Vignola claims that nearly every major popular-music guitarist in the world has been influenced by Reinhardt. Over the last few decades, annual Django festivals have been held throughout Europe and the U.S., and a biography has been written about his life. In February 2017, the Berlin International Film Festival held the world premiere of the French film Django.

Django put the Modern Jazz Quartet on the international musical map, crystallizing the MJQ’s elegant approach to blending American improvisational and European classical music. Pianist and musical director John Lewis, with innovative vibist Milt Jackson as foremost soloist, spearheaded the MJQ’s trailblazing fusion work, from the blues to Basie, Bach to bop, with bassist Percy Heath and drummer Kenny Clarke. The first notes of the title piece, Lewis’s tribute to gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, firmly established a new jazz tone.
