Kara Karayev was one of the most prominent figures in the music of 20th-century Azerbaijan, and an inspiration to subsequent generations of Azerbaijani composers. His eloquently expressive and tautly dramatic First Symphony is a significant work in Karayevs output, reflecting both the harmonies and melodic characteristics of the South Caucasus region and, in its orchestral brilliance, the influence of his mentor Shostakovich. The Violin Concerto shows a notable shift in style, exploring the serial techniques that add astringency and inventive depth to Karayevs already richly coloured and vividly diverse palette.

Ukranian composer Valentin Silvestrov has said that I do not write new music. My music is a response to and an echo of what already exists. This is particularly pertinent to works such as the Two Dialogues with Postscript that engage hauntingly with Schubert and Wagner, and the evocative Moments of Memory II which alludes to Chopin and yearns for an unreachable past. Music is still song, even if one cannot literally sing it, says Silvestrov.

Besides his ever-popular ballet Spartacus (Suites Nos. 1–3 are on Naxos 8.550801), Khachaturian also wrote other stage music, including a splendid score for Boris Lavrenyov’s play about the great Russian author Mikhail Lermontov. The composer described his powerful Second Symphony, written during the final years of World War II, as ‘a requiem of wrath, a requiem of protest against war and violence’. At crucial junctures, three tubular bells toll, giving the symphony its memorable subtitle.

Kazuo Yamada was one of Japan's most influential composers and conductors who, in his own works, rejected the 'facile exoticism' of Japanese nationalism that became the vogue at the onset of the Sino-Japanese war in 1937. The little symphonic poem A Song of Young People is one such 'protest' work. Kiso (Old Japanese Melody) is an orchestral paraphrase of two folk songs, while the symphonic suite India is a reworking of the ballet score Spellbinding, which is based on Indian legend.

The cello was a vital part of Catalan musical expression in the first half of the 20th century. Pablo Casals as composer and cello virtuoso was its revolutionary force, and his student Gaspar Cassadó joined him in writing superb transcriptions and expressive original works with a strong sense of tradition and national melodic flavour.

In December 1920, two years after Claude Debussy’s untimely death, the editors of the renowned Parisian musical magazine La Revue musicale published a special issue dedicated to the composer’s memory. At its heart was a joint memorial composition by prominent composers of the time. Each paid tribute to the late master in their own typical style while also reflecting on Debussy’s aesthetic, creating a kind of musical ‘time capsule’ of Paris in this unique historical period. From Dukas’ final piano work to Stravinsky’s monumental chorale, this is the first complete recording—made for its centenary—of Le Tombeau with the related works that proceeded from it.

Dvořák was a composer steeped in the national and folk music of his Bohemian homeland, and his orchestral music combines a broad and soulful melodic sweep with the wit of sparkling orchestration. Naxos is proud to present the most comprehensive overview yet of his orchestral output, the complete symphonies complemented by three charismatic concertos and a wealth of folk- and narrative-inspired orchestral works. A number of the shorter, less familiar works have been especially recorded for this anthology.

Tchaikovskys Violin Concerto is the quintessential national virtuoso showpiece, but other Russian composers have contributed strongly to the genre of works for solo violin and orchestra. Tchaikovskys student Taneyev, who rose to eminence in Moscow, wrote a memorable Suite de Concert that followed the model of the Baroque suite while infiltrating it with warm lyricism and brilliant variations. Earlier, Rimsky-Korsakov had written a Fantasia on Two Russian Themes that explored virtuoso potential in a concerto form that is both seductive and vibrant.
