Dorota Samsel Saxophone Conversations

Barcelona based Swedish tenor saxophonist Fredrik Carlquist releases his 9th album Saxophone Conversation . The music is built around the interplay between Carlquist and fellow saxophonist Joan Chamorro on baritone, both among the leading sax voices on Barcelona’s jazz scene today. The music stamps off in the swing era and continues to Carlquist’s original compositions where worked out ideas seamlessly melt together with improvisations. A dynamic and melodic music where details matter.The album also features bassists Tom Warburton & Garry Fimister, drummers Caspar St.Charles & Joe Smith, Swedish singer/song writer Richard Lindgren and Catalan trumpet player Andrea Motis which makes this album an interesting documentation from Barcelona’s vital and cosmopolitan jazz scene.

Following its previous album Evoke, with the pianist Timothy End, the Ferio Saxophone Quartet returns with this exciting and innovative programme of works for saxophone quartet and voices. Founded and directed by Freddie Crowley, the Corvus Consort is a vocal ensemble based in the UK, which draws its members from a pool of young singers in the early stages of their professional careers.

Classics Today 10/10. The Danish composer Anders Koppel (b. 1947) has one foot firmly planted in the European classical music tradition, and the other in world music, rock and jazz. On this album the two worlds meet when the Sjælland String Quartet are joined by Koppel’s son, the jazz icon Benjamin Koppel to perform the quintet for mezzo-saxophone and strings, which can be heard for the first time on this CD.

Contemporary music is often difficult to access, both for audiences and performing musicians, and doubly so if it involves unorthodox musical setups. Paul Cohen, leader of the TTF Saxophone Quartet, is here to challenge this conundrum. DANCES AND DECLAMATIONS compiles a treasure trove of saxophone quartets that are a pleasure to play — and to experience.

Presenting this project, the Milano Saxophone Quartet leads the public through a real Metamorphosis. The audience realizes the quartet’s sound-transformation, which shows, through the performance and the different styles, one of its main idiomatic characteristics i.e. the flexibility.

Memorias I: Memorias is clair-obscur’s birthday present for Astor Piazzolla, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2021. A manera de memorias is the title of Argentinean author Natalio Gorín’s anthology of interviews with Astor Piazzolla from the 1990s.

NoXaS Saxophone Quartet was established in 2007 and since then has distinguished itself as a high-quality ensemble with several collaborations with elite Norwegian musicians and ensembles. Its main objective is to perform the best possible repertoire for this type of ensemble format while simultaneously building up a new repertoire together with composers and other performers. Through this work, NoXaS has cemented its position as a significant asset to the Norwegian music scene.
