Double Down Live is a 2 DVD set from ZZ Top combining shows from 1980 and 2008. Disc one was filmed at the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany for the Rockpalast TV series. Hot on the heels of their classic "Deguello" album (it features 9 of the 10 songs from it) the show finds ZZ Top before sequencers and synthesizers epitomizing their "lil' ol' blues band from Texas" nickname…

Funkify your six-string grooves with polyphonic techniques Hire a bass player for the gig: $150. Hire a drummer: $150. Hire a horn section: $75 a man. Play all of the band parts yourself: Priceless. No, we're not talking about one of those evil little midi-crap machines that cats are using instead of real players 'cause gigs just don't pay what they used to. We're talking going solo on guitar and funkifying your six-string grooves with polyphonic techniques for crafting drum, bass, and horn parts a la Ben Lacy and his Two-Hand Groove Guitar technique.

Peter Green was regarded by some fans as the greatest white blues guitarist ever, Eric Clapton notwithstanding. Born Peter Greenbaum but calling himself Peter Green by the age of 15, he grew up in London's working-class East End. Green's early musical influences were Hank Marvin of the Shadows, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Freddie King, and traditional Jewish music. He originally played bass before being invited in 1966 by keyboardist Peter Bardens to play lead in the Peter B's, whose drummer was a lanky chap named Mick Fleetwood. The 19-year-old Green was with Bardens just three months before joining John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, whose rapidly shifting personnel included bassist John McVie and drummer Aynsley Dunbar.

After the success of Gladiator, it wasn't unusual to see director Ridley Scott turn to Hans Zimmer again for the score to Black Hawk Down, his fierce adaptation of Mark Bowden's account of the tragic 1993 American military intervention in Somalia. What was more surprising was the schedule Scott imposed on the German-born composer: 15 days to write, arrange, and record the film's nearly two hours of music. The results of Zimmer's miraculous two-week musical campaign not only belie those constraints; they instantly take their place alongside The Thin Red Line as some of the most compelling music he's produced. The gambit here is simple–portray the combatants as two warring tribes, with their native musics locked in a tense dance for domination.

The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal of the late 1970s and early 80s gave us many influential and enduring rockers; Derrylin, Co. Fermangh in Northern Ireland gave us Mama’s Boys, featuring the McManus brothers; Pat on guitar, John on bass & vocals and Tommy on drums. The young trio had come from a musical family steeped in traditional Irish music, but the McManus brothers developed a more rock-orientated direction when their band Pulse discovered Irish rockers, Horslips. When a DJ jokingly referred to the young group as a bunch of “Mama’s Boys”, the name stuck. An independent band in the truest sense of the word, they released a number of now very collectable 45s, plus the self-financed ‘Official Bootleg’ (CD1) in 1980 – it was essentially their demo, pressed up on vinyl to sell at gigs. Gaining attention across the water, they were invited to play a number of important support slots, including Hawkwind in 1982, Thin Lizzy’s 1983 farewell tour, opening for Wishbone Ash, and eventually a prestigious appearance at the 1983 Reading Rock festival.
