Released in 1975 (and known in the U.S. as When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease), HQ was the eighth solo album from Roy Harper, and a high-water mark for him commercially and critically (as well as a personal favorite). Harper was already coming off two stellar efforts in Lifemask (1973) and Valentine (1974), which marked yet another artistic peak and his introduction to American audiences.

One of the best-known players of the post-Coltrane generation, Texas tenor saxophonist Billy Harper earned his spurs with Art Blakey, Randy Weston, Gil Evans, and Max Roach. This 1979 album features Harper’s then-current working group. Fellow Texan Malcolm Pinson and Harper have been playing partners since high school. Bassist Wayne Dockery gained recognition through his work with Art Blakey; trumpeter Everett Hollins’ roots are grounded in rhythm and blues including work with the legendary Otis Redding, and pianist Armen Donelian worked with jazz giants Lionel Hampton and Sonny Rollins.

Released in August 1995, "Fight For Your Mind", was Ben Harper's last solo album before adding the Innocent Criminals to his line-up. Reviews were generally very positive, praising Harper's fusion of multiple genres, from folk, folk rock, Black Sabbath-style riffing heavy metal and politically charged reggae.

"The Will to Live" is a 1997 album by Ben Harper which showed his continuing folk-centric focus, while at the same time expanding on his rock talents. The record would yield his first UK Top 75 single, Faded. To date it remains his only UK single entry. This was his second album with the Innocent Criminals as backing band.

Ben Harper's 1999 release "Burn To Shine" is his fourth album and third with the Innocent Criminals. The songs cover a lot of musical ground, from acoustic to electric and from folk to rock, all cloaked in Harper's characteristic retro sound. In addition to his own musicians, the lineup of guests includes the Real Time Jazz Band, David Lindley on banjo, fiddle and mandolin, keyboardist Tyrone Downie from the Wailers and several string and horn players. "Burn To Shine" features the adult radio hit and longtime concert staple "Steal My Kisses".
