Part harmonica wizard and part rhythmic explorer, Harper is a fiery artist who blurs the lines between rock, folk and blues. His use of the didgeridoo, an indigenous wind instrument of his native Australia, along with his compelling original songwriting and sublime vocals, gives Harper a distinctive sound entirely his own. One of the best-known players of the post-Coltrane generation, Texas tenor saxophonist Billy Harper earned his spurs with Art Blakey, Randy Weston, Gil Evans, and Max Roach. This 1979 album features Harper’s then-current working group. Fellow Texan Malcolm Pinson and Harper have been playing partners since high school. Bassist Wayne Dockery gained recognition through his work with Art Blakey; trumpeter Everett Hollins’ roots are grounded in rhythm and blues including work with the legendary Otis Redding, and pianist Armen Donelian worked with jazz giants Lionel Hampton and Sonny Rollins.

Recorded direct to analogue tape in one week at the end of a long world tour, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals's top 10 release "Lifeline" was an effort to recreate the energy of their acclaimed live show. Many of these songs were written on the road and worked out in sound checks before being committed to tape in a Paris studio. The instrumental track "Paris Sunrise #7" garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

Produced by Fussell and co-founder Alana Pagnutti and mixed by Joel Ford (Ford and Lopatin, Yes/And), Honey Harper and The Infinite Sky features the premiere of The Infinite Sky, a stacked backing band consisting of longtime bassist and contributing writer Mick Mayer, pianist John Carroll Kirby (Solange, Steve Lacy), Spoon keyboardist Alex Fischel, guitarist Jackson MacIntosh (Drugdealer, Jessica Pratt), pedal-steel player Connor Gallaher (Black Lips, Calexico), and TOPS drummer Riley Fleck.

Released in August 1995, "Fight For Your Mind", was Ben Harper's last solo album before adding the Innocent Criminals to his line-up. Reviews were generally very positive, praising Harper's fusion of multiple genres, from folk, folk rock, Black Sabbath-style riffing heavy metal and politically charged reggae.
