Duke Pearson had always displayed a flair for arranging, even on small combo albums, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that he would attempt his own big band record. What is a surprise is how successful Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band actually is. Pearson leads 13 other musicians through a selection of nine songs, including four originals, two contemporary jazz tunes by Chick Corea and Joe Sample, and three standards. His originals are continually unpredictable and memorable, and his arrangements, especially of the standards, are provocative and intriguing. While it might not appeal to fans of Pearson's wonderful small-group hard bop sessions, it is unquestionably an experiment that works, and one that confirms his remarkable skills and talents.

Duke Pearson returned to a big band setting for Now Hear This!, once again proving his agility and inventiveness as an arranger and leader. Working with a larger band than before – the total number of musicians weighs in at 17 – Pearson nevertheless keeps things clean and uncluttered. His compositions, as well as the songs he covers, cover a broad range of emotions, styles, and tonal colors, with lush ballads taking the center stage. Even if much of this music is beautiful, Pearson's arrangements take chances and are unconventional, which means it rewards close listening as well.

An acclaimed pianist, composer and producer, and an A&R man to boot, Duke Pearson played a crucial role in the development of the hard bop genre at the turn of the 1960s. As a musician, he led many of his own groups and played on the records of a host of jazz greats, most notably by esteemed jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, but also those by Grant Green, Thad Jones and Pepper Adams. And although his recording career was cut tragically short - his time as bandleader lasted little over a decade - a ferocious work ethic led to the great man's legacy boasting a magnificent catalogue of albums, particularly during the early part of his career.
