After independently leaving The Spencer Davis Group in late 1968, organist and singer Eddie Hardin and drummer Pete York got back together a few months later to work as that most intriguing of late Sixties rock music concepts: the power duo.
Self-described as “the world's smallest big band”, Hardin & York's two-man brand of rock, blues, jazz and soul – not a million miles away from the likes of Traffic or Procol Harum - was hugely popular on the Continent. Indeed, they had such a following in Germany that one show was surreptitiously taped, becoming one of the earliest European vinyl bootlegs when it was sneaked out in 1970.
Naturally enough, that live set is included on our definitive 6-CD anthology, together with further live performances (including a 1972 show for the BBC now gaining its first-ever commercial release), their trio of 1969-71 albums, various studio out-takes and even a non-UK 1974 reunion LP that was recorded with former Taste bassist Charlie McCracken. A 6-CD package, Can't Keep A Good Man Down is the final word on one of the most intriguing musical partnerships of the late Sixties/early Seventies. Housed in a stylish clamshell box, it includes a 24-page booklet with rare photos, a new 4000 word essay on the duo as well as a scene-setting foreword by Pete York.

Matia Bazar is an Italian pop band formed in Genoa in 1975. The original members of the group were Piero Cassano (keyboards) Aldo Stellita (bass), Carlo Marrale (guitar), Giancarlo Golzi (drums) and Antonella Ruggiero (vocals). They represented Italy in the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest with a song called Raggio di luna. Their major hits were Solo tu (1978), Vacanze Romane (1982) and Ti Sento (1985), which peaked the charts in Belgium and Italy.

Éric Charles Heidsieck is a French classical pianist.Born in Reims, Heidsieck gave his first recital at the age of nine and his first concert with orchestra a year later.He studied with Marcel Ciampi then Alfred Cortot and followed Wilhelm Kempff's lessons on Beethoven.In 1959, he won the Grand Prix du Disque (EMI) for the recording of Mozart's Concerto No. 21 and No. 24. The following year, he and his wife Tania, also a pianist, founded a duo that shone on stages around the world.
In 1969, Heidsieck was the first French pianist of the 20th century to give, by memory and in public, Beethoven's 32 Sonatas, which he recorded with EMI Classics between 1970 and 1974 and again ten years later, then in 1997. He specializes in the performance and recording of integrals.Since the beginning of his career, Heidsieck has given more than 2000 concerts around the world. He has also given numerous masterclasses in France and abroad.In France, he has taught for 18 years at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon.From 1957 to 2004, he recorded about 100 discs.He is also the composer of several cycles of melodies.

Musicians responded strongly to Beinum's leadership – he represented the antithesis of Mengelberg's autocratic manner. Beinum preferred to work with an orchestra in a collaborative sense, and his evenhanded approach was what the Concertgebouw needed in the postwar period when tensions were running high. In 1949 Beinum was named principal conductor of the London Philharmonic, premiering several works of Benjamin Britten and encouraging the efforts of aspiring composer Malcolm Arnold. Beinum took the Concertgebouw on a successful tour of the United States in 1956, dividing the conducting duties with Rafael Kubelik. Beinum also accepted the job of musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic beginning in 1956. It was during a rehearsal with the Concertgebouw in April 1959 that Beinum suffered a fatal heart attack at age 58. Beinum is first heard in radio air checks from 1939, and his full-fledged recording career did not get underway until Telefunken recorded him with the Concertgebouw in November 1941.
