In 1975, when Bluebird brought out a double-LP reissue of vintage Earl Hines big-band recordings, the producers included a chain of beefy instrumentals from 1941. The Classics Chronological series zeroed in and fleshed out an important part of the picture by compiling all of Hines' 1941 material onto one CD 16 years later. What you get are eight terrific instrumentals interspersed with ten vocal tracks and a pair of fine piano solos. Since the vocal performances were aimed at the general record-buying public, they deviate noticeably from the powerhouse home base of big-band swing infused with intimations of the approaching bebop revolution. Eight instrumentals, then, form the backbone of this volume in the complete recordings of Earl Hines…

During a five-year period the Master Jazz label recorded 11 swing-based pianists in solo settings. Although the label went under later in the decade, the recordings were treasured by collectors. Mosaic, on this four-CD set, brought back all of the music from the original five-volume Master Jazz Piano series, adding two unissued selections and a full album released separately of Ram Ramirez's playing. In addition to Ramirez (who is heard on 13 numbers), there are 13 performances by Earl Hines, four apiece from Claude Hopkins, Cliff Jackson, Keith Dunham, Sonny White, Teddy Wilson, Cliff Smalls and the obscure Gloria Hearn, eight by Jay McShann and two from Sir Charles Thompson. Most of these pianists (other than Hines and Wilson) rarely recorded during this period in their careers, making this box very important both musically and historically.
Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve with the latest 24bit/96kHz mastering. Michael "Dodo" Marmarosa, born Pittsburgh, December 12, 1925, died September 17, 2002, jazz piano player, a link between swing and bebop, recorded with (among others) Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Lucky Thompson, Barney Kessel, Charlie Barnet and Slim Gaillard; retired from music, early sixties; died 76. That's what you surely will read in many books about him. Of course, Dodo disappeared from music when he was only 36; but he'll forever remain as one essential link between the swing era and bebop. Maybe he was one of the founders of bebop. Just a great musician.
