Pierre Bertrand, winner of the Victoires du Jazz 2017 for his latest album "JOY" offers in 2018 an ambitious new project "Le Voyage Impossible", a reinterpretation with his Caja Negra ensemble of the "Far East Suite" by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Pierre Bertrand & Caja Negra is a group placed under the signs of travel and otherness, with the meeting of musicians and singers from aesthetics that usually only rarely meet: jazz and flamenco.

This Swiss Cascavelle disc most adroitly presents the world premiere recording of the orchestral poem Helvetia alongside two less obscure works for viola and orchestra. A highly attractive release, well designed and documented. Enthusiasts of Bloch, the viola and the mountain heights must not miss this.

Any album titled "East Meets West" may raise suspicions of crossover commercialism, and purists may reject this disc as a contrived hybrid of classical and international genres. But violinist Daniel Hope presents a program that is much more than a superficial exercise in multiculturalism, and his selections reveal the exotic impulses that touched many composers in the twentieth century. While Ravi Shankar's Raga Piloo and Swara-Kakali overtly reach westward, particularly in the employment of a violin with the Indian sitar, tabla, and tanpura, Ravel's Tzigane, de Falla's Suite populaire espagnol, and Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances are more dispersed in their regional influences and certainly suggest no connections with Asia.

Jazz at Lincoln Center opens its 35th concert season in Rose Theater with Wynton Marsalis: The Shanghai Suite, which Wynton Marsalis composed to celebrate the opening of Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai, and premiered at that club with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on March 16, 2019, amid a two-week tour of mainland China. The Orchestra will interpret Marsalis’ “tone parallel” to the mythology, folklore, cuisine and architecture of the enormous Chinese entrepot and financial hub. Shanghai Suite joins such iconic Marsalis works as Congo Square, Vitoria Suite and Marciac Suite, that refract impressions gleaned on his travels, as Duke Ellington did on such late-period masterpieces as The Far East Suite, The Latin American Suite and The New Orleans Suite.

As part of Radio 2's Great British Songbook, Bob Harris investigates the songs the Beatles gave away. The most popular group in the world for over 45 years, a recent issue of re-mastered albums saw four Top 10 entries in the UK chart, while their compilation '1' looks set to be America's biggest album this decade. The fevered excitement that accompanied every release in the 1960s is well documented but less is known about the music written, though not necessarily recorded or released, by the Beatles during the same decade.

Brazilian cellist Antonio Meneses, a member of the Beaux Arts Trio and a frequent collaborator of the world’s greatest conductors and orchestras, takes a solo turn with the most noble of works for his instrument, J S Bach’s Six Cello Suites. A consummate master of his instrument, Antonio started playing the cello when he was 10 years old. At the age of 16 his musical studies took him to Europe, and in 1982 he won the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. He has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and New York Philharmonic, among others, with such conductors as Karajan, Abbado, Rostropovich, Muti and Chailly. In the recording studio he famously collaborated with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic in Brahms’ Double Concerto for Violin and Cello (with Anne-Sophie Mutter), and Strauss’ Don Quixote. Playing a Jean-Baptiste Vuillaumme cello from Paris c.1840, Antonio’s renditions of Bach’s seminal works are marked by purity and grace, introspection and sophistication.
