Swedish composer Ture Rangström (1884–1947), a contemporary of Sibelius and Nielsen, was largely self-taught and defiantly independent in his approach to symphonic composition. Though well versed in counterpoint and sonata principles, Rangström largely rejected these techniques in favor of his own, which emphasized content over form, and drama over development. While there’s no doubting the dramatic and narrative power of the music, the lack of true counterpoint (his themes are not harmonically interrelated or contrasted, but rather blatantly juxtaposed) makes them ultimately unsatisfying as symphonies but perfectly suitable, as, for example, film scores, or as multi-movement symphonic poems (poets were his main inspiration).

In order to celebrate their 20 year anniversary LACUNA COIL and Century Media Records have compiled a limited box-set entitled "The Presence of the Past (XX Years of Lacuna Coil)" including all of their studio albums as well as selected live material, rare songs and b-sides on 13 discs. The box-set will come with a luxurious booklet that will not only give you all lyrics, but also historical photos and liner-notes. For Italy's LACUNA COIL, turning 20 will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, not only for the Milan-based outfit, but also for their diehard fans around the globe.

This is DORO's 20th album! Epic 2018 album from German metal queen featuring 25 tracks including 'Soldier Of Metal' & 'Lost In The Ozone'. German heavy metal/hard rock goddess Doro Pesch is best known for her years with the power metal band Warlock, but she has had a long solo career and continued to command a loyal following (especially in Europe) long after the group's demise. After releasing four albums with Warlock in the 1980s, Pesch set out on her own, touring and recording under her first name, beginning with 1989's Force Majeure. Dialing back on the gothic fantasy metal of Warlock, Pesch adopted a more pop-metal/hard rock sound, which she would continue to hone well into the next century. Shifting musical tastes in the early '90s resulted in Pesch finding most of her success in the European market, where metal still reigned supreme, but as the 2000s progressed, Doro once again found favor abroad via late-career standouts like Warrior Soul and Raise Your Fist.

For turning out reliable recordings of the standard repertoire, it's hard to beat Neeme Järvi and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra because their releases on BIS are always highly enjoyable, and they are dependable for accurate renditions that are genuinely exciting. The six-CD set of Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's symphonies Nos. 1-6, the Serenade for strings, Romeo and Juliet, Capriccio Italien, Francesca da Rimini, and other less familiar orchestral works, is a bargain that shouldn't be missed, for the beginning classical fan has everything necessary to begin appreciating the Russian master, while connoisseurs will find unexpected surprises in the obscure selections.

The box consists of 6 CDs and a DVD of studio out-takes, deleted obscurities, compilation appearances, vinyl and download releases. All discs are over 75 minutes in length and feature a wealth of previously unreleased material.

This year (2014) marks Yo La Tengo’s 30th anniversary, and they’re celebrating it by reissuing their sixth album, Painful, released nearly a decade into their career. The cardigan-cozy sound of the record effectively established Yo La Tengo as indie rock’s great romantics, and featured a couple of significant firsts for the trio.
