Eddie Gomez is a brilliant bassist whose flexibility and quick reflexes make him an ideal accompanist (although his own albums tend to be a bit erratic jazz-wise). He grew up in New York and was with the Newport Festival Youth Band during 1959-1961. After studying at Juilliard, Gomez played with Rufus Jones' sextet, Marian McPartland (1964), Paul Bley (1964-1965), Giuseppe Logan, Gerry Mulligan, and Gary McFarland, among others. Gomez came to fame during his long period with the Bill Evans Trio (1966-1977).

A flute-bass duo is not an everyday occurrence on CD, let alone making up an entire release. Yet the combination of Jeremy Steig and Eddie Gomez in this 1975 concert works extremely well because of the virtuoso talent of both musicians, along with their obviously compatibility. They previously had worked together on the Bill Evans' album What's New and Gomez had recently departed Evans at the time of this recording.

"Structures" is a relaxed album of jazz standards and original compositions from this formidable trio, all captured with Chesky's world-renowned minimalist recording techniques. "These world-class improvisers create a vibe of calm thoughtfulness, subtlety and delicate interaction on Structures", according to the album's liner notes. Abercrombie's first Chesky release came in 2003 with "Three Guitars", a highly acclaimed album that saw him going acoustic with Larry Coryell and Brazilian phenomenon Badi Assad. This recording blends nicely the rhythms from pop jazz, with more traditional jazz elements. Excellent musicians that provide a recording that should be enjoyable for both fans of be-bop and pop music. Spanish Flower is a beautiful ballad and one of the highlights with an elegant bass solo by Eddie Gomez. Mr. Go includes a really enjoyable flute solo. Forever is another beautiful ballad, this time with a wonderful sax solo. W110th street is a nice rhythm full number that includes the entire set of musicians. – Rodolfo Romanach-suarez

Bassist Eddie Gomez is better as a sideman than as a leader on recording dates, but this is one of his stronger efforts in the latter category (even if one has to get used to him taking or sharing virtually all of the melodies). Chick Corea sticks exclusively to an atmospheric synthesizer, but otherwise this is a fairly straight-ahead quintet session featuring Gomez with the Coltrane-ish tenor of Rick Margitza, pianist James Williams, drummer Lenny White, and a guest appearance from flutist Jeremy Steig.
