It is the early 20th century, and hard-working Sicilian peasant Salavtore (Vincenzo Amato) has had enough of working on the land. His mother and two sons are to accompany him; two young women heading for arranged marriages are placed in their care; and along the way they meet a mysterious Englishwoman who also needs his help. Yet in the midst of all this responsibility, and despite the thrust of his ambition, Salvatore feels torn as he says goodbye to the land and way of life which his family has known for centuries.

Début du XXème siècle. Dans un coin perdu de la campagne sicilienne, vit une famille de paysans qui s'échinent sur le même lopin de terre depuis des générations. Ils mènent une existence en harmonie avec la nature et cohabitent avec les esprits de leurs défunts. La monotonie de leur vie quotidienne est interrompue par des récits du Nouveau Monde, de leurs habitants, et des innombrables richesses de cet Eden… Salvatore décide de vendre tout ses biens : sa terre, sa maison, son bétail pour partir avec ses enfants et sa mère âgée mener une vie meilleure de l'autre côté de l'océan. Mais pour devenir citoyen du Nouveau Monde, il faut mourir et renaître un peu. Il faut abandonner les traditions séculaires et les vieilles croyances de sa terre, il faut être sain de corps et d'esprit savoir obéir et jurer fidélité si l'on veut franchir "La Porte d'Or"…

Kasabada bu mayýs, sanki eskiye göre daha sýcak, daha sýkýntýlý. Herkes küçük dertleriyle , sürprizlere kapalý hayatlarýyla yine de huzurlu görünüyor. Ancak bu huzur, çocukluðunu geçirdiði bu kasabada bir film çekmeyi kafasýna koymuþ Muzaffer’in geliþiyle biraz zedelenir. Mayýs Sýkýntýsý doðduðu kasabaya film çekmek üzere dönen Muzaffer'in hikayesini anlatýr. Babasý Emin, tarlasýnýn yanýndaki küçük bir ormanlýk bölgeyi tarlasýnýn hudutlarý içine katma mücadelesindedir. Dokuz yaþýndaki yeðeni Ali ise babasýna bir müzikli saat aldýrabilmek için uðraþýr. Bu uðurda halasý tarafýndan bir sýnava tabi tutulmayý kabul eder. Eðer bir yumurtayý kýrk gün kýrmadan cebinde taþýmayý baþarýrsa saat konusunda bir þansý olabilecektir. Ve kuzeni Saffet, þansý ve talihi pek yolunda gitmeyen bir kasabalýdýr ve renkli bir yaþam vaat eden Ýstanbul'a göç etmeyi hayal eder.

"Clouds of May" tells the story of Muzaffer, who returns to his native town to make a movie. His father, Emin, is bent on saving the small forest he cultivates on his property from confiscation by the authorities. His nephew, nine year-old Ali, who wants a musical watch. He has to carry an egg in his pocket for 40 days without cracking it, according to terms of an agreement made with his aunt, who has promised in return to convince Ali's father to purchase this much wanted item for his son. And Muzaffer's cousin, Saffet, who is a young town dweller whose affords are all doomed to failure by bad luck (or is it by his own rebelliousness) and who dreams of going to Istanbul.

Un jour de mai, Muzzaffer retourne dans sa ville natale d'Anatolie où vit encore sa famille pour y tourner un film. Son père, Emin, s'acharne à empêcher la confiscation par les autorités locales du terrain et de la forêt dont il s'occupe depuis toujours. Son cousin Saffet rêve de quitter l'usine, tandis qu'Ali, son petit neveu de neuf ans, souhaite posséder une montre musicale. Nuages de mai du réalisateur turc Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Kasaba) a remporté le Prix Européen de la Critique 2000, le Prix FIPRESCI, le Grand Prix du jury à la 13ème édition du Festival de cinéma Premiers Plans d'Angers, le Prix Don Quichotte au Forum Européen de Strasbourg et le Prix du meilleur film au Festival de Bruxelles.
