Cuando el dictador militar Augusto Pinochet, al verse presionado por la comunidad internacional, convoca un plebiscito ciudadano en torno a su permanencia en el poder en 1988, los líderes de la oposición persuaden a un atrevido y joven creativo de publicidad, René Saavedra (Gael García Bernal), para que encabece su campaña.
