At age 42, Rafael Belvedere is having a crisis. He lives in the shadow of his father, he feels guilty about rarely visiting his aging mother, his ex-wife says he doesn't spend enough time with their daughter and he has yet to make a commitment to his girlfriend. At his lowest point, a minor heart attack reunites him with Juan Carlos, a childhood friend, who helps Rafael to reconstruct his past and look at the present in new ways.

Paskaljevic's debut feature delighted critics and audiences at the 1976 Berlin Film Festival and immediately established the twenty-seven-year-old Yugoslavian as a promising filmmaker. A young man, maladroit but determined, takes a job as a beach guard in winter so he and his girlfriend can spend some time alone. But their parents are not happy. Will their passion survive?

Now in his thirties, Antoine Doinel has divorced his wife Christine and is having a love affair with a young shop girl, Sabine. This new relationship becomes strained when Antoine skips a dinner date to take his son Alphonse to the railway station. There, by chance, he meets his first love, Colette, who is now a successful lawyer. She has just bought a copy of Antoine’s biography, which relates all of his past loves, and she is not impressed by his poetic licence. As they talk on the train, Antoine outlines the plot for his next book, in which a man falls in love with the woman in a torn up photograph and devotes himself to finding her. As Antoine leaves the train in a hurry, he drops a piece of paper. It is the torn photograph of a young woman, lovingly put together with tape.

Quinta y última película acerca de la vida de Antoine Doinel, que al igual que las otras cuatro interpreta Jean-Pierre Léaud. Truffaut finaliza el ciclo, mostrando la vida de Antoine con más de treinta años y divorciado. La búsqueda del amor sigue siendo una constante, pero ahora, gracias a sus experiencias (recordadas por medio de flasbacks, que el director rescata de las anteriores películas) comprende que el amor exige sacrificio y compromiso.
