Breakwater’s sophomore and final album, “Splashdown”, released in 1980, is a fine example of sophisticated early 80’s R&B and funk, plus a few grand ballads, which should have charted high but were ignored by both Pop and R&B radio. “Splashdown” consists of 8 songs and most are jazzy, funky and danceable R&B. Any of the songs on this set would have been a welcome addition to Top 40 Pop, R&B or Dance charts had radio or Breakwater’s label been more supportive. “Splashdown Time”, “You”, “Say You Love Me Girl”, and “Let Love In” are all funk-jazzy hard hitting dance floor grooves. “Release The Beast” is a great progressive Rocker that just begs to crank up the volume. “Love Of My Life”, “The One In My Dreams”, and “Time” are the three stunning mid tempo quiet storm gems, that display Breakwater’s versatility. Unfortunately for the band, it appears that Arista, their label, simply did not know how to properly promote Breakwater since it was impossible to pigeonhole Breakwater into just R&B, Pop, Funk or Dance.
