1963's "Ella and Basie!" is the first of many collaborations between the Count and the "First Lady of Song". Quincy Jones's arrangement of a perfect selection of jazz standards and Broadway classics captures the intimacy of Fitzgerald's playful vocals and the polish of Count Basie's band. Originally released in 1963 and featuring an unbelievable line up of future and current all-stars of the time (including Eric Dixon, Urbie Green, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Freddie Green, to name just a few), Ella and Basie! is an exhilarating session. This much-loved album captures both artists at the height of their powers.

The Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong edition of Verve's long-running Compact Jazz series of reissues condenses three remarkable albums - 1955's Ella and Louis, 1956's Ella and Louis againN, and 1958's porgy and bess - into a fantastic 12-track collection. Of course, you could pick and random assortment of 12 tracks from these three discs and have a collection of fantastic merit, but these specific performances are particularly outstandin.

Ella Fitzgerald's second studio session with Duke Ellington followed her first (Sings the Duke Ellington Song Book) by eight years. The underrated set begins quietly with four emotional ballads (who else could hold their own with Johnny Hodges on "Passion Flower?") before Fitzgerald gets to scat a bit on the closing vamp of "Azure," comes up with fresh ideas on "Duke's Place," and closes the show by scatting up a storm on "Cotton Tail."

An appearance in Hollywood for a first-rate jazz vocalist was not necessarily an opportunity to broadcast your visage and pander to everyone from Tacoma to Tallahassee. It could also include a date at the Crescendo, the Sunset Strip's best chance to find premier jazz. Gene Norman's nightclub hosted dozens of jazz legends (and a comic or two), and produced more than its share of excellent LPs recorded on location. Better even than Mel Tormé's 1954 classic, the Ella Fitzgerald LP that resulted from her May 1961 appearances generated one of the best (and certainly most underrated) live records in her discography – and almost 50 years later, it became a four-CD set compiling ten days' worth of performances.

This early '60s studio session captures Ella Fitzgerald moving toward the smaller, more pointedly jazz-inflected ensembles that would shape her career in her final decades. The intimate setting, superb musicianship and stellar recording make it a favorite among jazz-oriented audiophiles. Not to be missed!
