The Norwegian trio GURLS – tenor sax player Hanna Paulsberg, bassist Ellen Andrea Wang and lead vocalist Rohey Taalah, made quite a noise with the cheeky, feminine songs of its debut album Run Boy, Run (Jazzland, 2018, the record won the Norwegian Grammy, Spellemannprisen for the best jazz record of the year). Four years later Gurls return with a live album, Oui, a new lead vocalist, Marianna Sangita Angeletaki Røe, a few new songs, and new arrangements of the not-so-old songs, together with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra (TJO).

Formed in Oslo in 1992/93, WHITE WILLOW has built a reputation over the years as a diverse, subtle, progressively-focused group, their albums always critically acclaimed and revered as influential. Norwegian art rockers White Willow have always incorporated elements of progressive rock into their music, and on their seventh disc, Future Hopes, they continue to explore that path. Future Hopes is nothing if not diverse; each song on the album sounds different, from the soundscapes of “Where There Was Sea There Is Abyss” to the guitar heavy sounds of “Animal Magnetism (Scorpions cover).” The album also experiments with electronic and acoustic sounds, making it an unpredictable listen.

Marilyn Mazur's album Shamania is fascinating. Both impressionistic and abstract, it emphasizes wordless vocals and sounds while incorporating elements of global jazz and world music. The ten artists who play with Mazur are all women and hail from the Scandinavian avant-garde jazz scene. Mazur's compositions are like kaleidoscopic postcards. The set begins with the ethereal "New Secret," where vocals permeate over a soft, flowing rhythm as the music evolves into a bird-like dream. On the safari-sounding "Rytmeritual," the vocal bounces off the horns over a rolling rhythm. "CHAAS" begins with a soft trumpet solo and develops into a rambunctious ride, like jeepney travel on the streets of Manila.

Erlend Viken has composed a striking and personal work in the winter, performed together with a stellar team of musicians. Frida Ånnevik has contributed two lyrics, sung by Ellen Andrea Wang and Marius Graff. Erlend is one of Norway's most accomplished folk musicians and in recent years has invested in his trio Erlend Viken Trio, which takes the folk music out of the box and shows a strong need for exploration. This commissioning work further emphasizes the exploration of the exploration, the different phases of winter from the last to the highly rhythmic, through a work in which the peculiar features of folk music are shrouded in the background of fellow musicians in jazz and pop.

Hanna Paulsberg's tenor saxophone voice is increasingly in demand for a wide variety of projects, from the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra to collaborations with Ellen Andrea Wang, Jon Balke, Andreas Ulvo, Erland Dahlen and veteran Knut Rissnaes. Yet her standing as a composer and leader of one of Norway's most outstanding young quartets has been firmly established with releases such as Waltz for Lili (Ora Fonogram, 2012) and Song for Josia (Ora Fonogram, 2014). Eastern Smiles, her third release, and first on Odin Records, continues the course established on her previous two releases, with six original compositions highlighting the dual melodic and rhythmic pulses that drive her music.
