After three years of waiting now follows the second part of the Reader Of The Runes trilogy and at the same time eleventh album of the Italian folk power metal legends Elvenking! With "Reader Of The Runes - Divination" this mystical journey was started in 2019, which finds another fabulous climax on "Reader Of The Runes - Rapture". For twenty years, the band has already proven that they well deserved their cult status in the scene and not only through outstanding live shows can expand their fan base more and more. With "Reader Of The Runes - Rapture" Elvenking show that they are not treading water and continue to develop their sound without losing their trademark. Another strong foundation in a usual flawless discography.

Being a huge power metal fan, and someone who likes it equally when in its purest form and when mixed with other genres, one of my absolute favorite genre combinations is power/folk metal, a style which has sadly not been done a lot in recent years, but the best band in the style continues to go strong. Of course, I’m talking about Italian band Elvenking, who stormed onto the scene with their incredible debut Heathenreel in 2001, and they haven’t let up ever since. The band has managed to come up with a very diverse sound while sticking with their two main genres, and they’ve certainly surprised folks throughout their career, sometimes going for a more aggressive, almost metalcore sound, sometimes completely toning down the power metal in favor of pure folk, and sometimes striking a near perfect balance between the two.

While checking out a music video for one of the lead singles to Elvenking‘s latest record, Reader of the Runes – Divination, I stumbled across a comment that deeply resonated with me. To paraphrase: “This is pretty good, but I still feel like a Pagan Manifesto widow.” It’s rare for a band to drop their best album seventeen years and eight LPs in their career, but 2014’s The Pagan Manifesto was precisely that. That record’s focus on power metal bombast was retained in 2017’s Secrets of the Magick Grimoire, but ultimately that record struggled in replicating its predecessor’s success. Unsurprisingly, Divination also fails to match Elvenking‘s high water mark; this time, however, the quality gap has lessened significantly. A comprehensive overview of everything that makes Elvenking‘s trademark folky power metal so uniquely charming, Divination comes across as one of the most confident records in the band’s lengthy catalog.

Animus is the third album by the Italian power metal band Moonlight Haze. Moonlight Haze is a power symphonic metal band from Italy founded in 2018 by Chiara Tricarico and Giulio Capone, vocals and drums/keyboards respectively. The lineup also includes Alessandro Jacobi (also bassist of Elvenking) and Alberto Melinato and Marco Falanga on guitars. Lyrically-wise it's an introspective and intimate work, but at the same time it looks at the world outside - willing to bring a bright message of vitality and rebirth. Hence the title, 'Animus', a Latin word that has different meanings: vital force, conscience, soul, mind and courage as well. The album was released on March 18 via Scarlet Records.
