Baroque Pop, Ballad, Easy Listening

Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach first collaborated on "God Give Me Strength," a sweeping ballad that functioned as the centerpiece in Allison Anders' Grace of My Heart. It was a stunning song in the tradition of Bacharach's classic '60s work and it was successful enough that the composers decided to collaborate on a full album, Painted from Memory. Wisely, they chose to work within the stylistic parameters of Bacharach's '60s material, but Painted from Memory never sounds like a stylistic exercise. Instead, it's a return to form for both artists. Bacharach hasn't written such graceful, powerful melodies since his glory days, and Costello hasn't crafted such a fully realized album since King of America. It's a testament to both that even if the album is clearly in Bacharach's territory, it feels like a genuine collaboration.

Sean Costello was one of the most brilliant blues-based artists of his generation. His deeply soulful singing, songwriting and guitar playing crossed effortlessly between genres. Sean entered the scene as a child prodigy, and soon became regarded as a torchbearer, one of the leading lights of the new century. He had already gained international recognition when he died tragically in 2008, on the eve of his 29th birthday. IN THE MAGIC SHOP is Sean Costello’s previously unreleased 2005 studio album, produced in New York City by his longtime friend, collaborator and advocate, four-time Grammy Award winner Steve Rosenthal, in his recording studio, The Magic Shop. This is Sean Costello at his best, performing his stunning original compositions and well-chosen covers with band mates Paul Linden, Melvin Zachery and Ray Hangen, along with a few guests. This should have been Sean’s breakthrough record — but it remained unmixed and unheard for almost ten years.

Sean Croghan's amazing first solo offering is a desolate, razor-burned troubadour's record loaded with confessional angst both real and artistic, a few full revolutions from the music he made with Crackerbash and Jr. High. His outpouring of woeful emotion runs the gamut, from an almost whimsical kind of feigned misery ("Gweneveire") to the adamant, resentful sort that sounds genuinely hurt. By mixing up the approach, the tenor of the album never seems like too much or too little of a painful thing. It isn't strictly an open wound, although there's an element of that. But Croghan is also smart enough to know that, as messy as love may be, there is an element of silliness that comes with investing so much into a single venture.

Live Aid was one of the biggest global television events of all time. An estimated 1.9 billion people across the world tuned in for the concert broadcast, and it was estimated that the TV telecast reached more than 500 million of the world's approximate 600 million TV sets, including in the Soviet Union (now Russia) and China (which was unprecedented at the time in the 1980s). Live Aid was a benefit concert held on Saturday 13 July 1985, as well as a music-based fundraising initiative. The original event was organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia. Billed as the "global jukebox", the event was held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London, UK, attended by about 72,000 people and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, US, attended by 89,484 people.
