Emeralds

Emeralds—the Ohio trio of John Elliott, Steve Hauschildt, and Mark McGuire—have announced a reissue of their 2008 debut Solar Bridge. The re-release arrives September 30 via Ghostly International. Today, Emeralds have shared the previously unreleased single “Photosphere” as a digital exclusive.

One of the most popular soul trios of their time, both at home in the US and here in the UK where they toured frequently, the Detroit Emeralds' Westbound 45s maintained a constant presence in the soul and pop charts on both sides of the pond until 1974, when the original group split up. All in all, the group released 11 US singles between 1969 and 1975. Most (but not all) of the songs on those singles have been reissued before, but 'I Think Of You' marks the first time that all of the group's A-sides and B-sides have been presented - in the order of their release and as they were originally heard - on one CD - with several mono-only 45 mixes appearing in a digital format for the first time.

The first two albums by the Detroit Emeralds - one of Detroit's finest and most unheralded vocal groups - are here burned on one CD. Thank you technology. These 22 tracks contain just the right mixture of uptown cool and Southern soul to please most everybody. Their hits "Do Me Right," "You Want It You Got It," and "Baby Let Me Take You (In My Arms)" are the cream, but "Wear This Ring (With Love)," "Feel the Need in Me," "I Bet You Get the One You Love" (also done by the Floaters), John Lennon/Paul McCartney's "And I Love Her," and others also work.

This album collects all of the highlights from the Detroit Emeralds' '70s recordings, including the U.K. hits 'Feel the Need in Me,' 'You Want It You Got It' and 'I Think of You,' making it the definitive career overview of this underrated soul group. Anyone who boogied through the disco era will remember the tune 'Feel The Need' - it's right up there with 'I Will Survive', 'We Are Family', and - dare I say it - 'YMCA', as one of just a handful of true mirror-ball anthems. What's more it's still played today. You can hear it in discerning clubs where the 70s feel still rules.
