Moving over to Shanachie Records, the reunited Lonestar continue the path they started on 2013's Life as We Know It on Never Enders. The title song alludes to the group's status as survivors: at the point this record hit the stores in 2016, the quartet was closing in on a quarter-century in the business. To their credit, Lonestar choose to embrace their age here, getting a little bit more mellow than they did on the 2013 reunion with Richie McDonald, a move that's tantamount to a basic-to-basics for the quartet.

This band led by German saxophonist Johannes Enders is inspired by Pharoah Sanders' emotional intensity and never derivative. In nine original compositions the musicians build a bridge back to Sanders, formulating their very own interpretation, expanding on it, and making it swing. Johannes Enders has found an ideal trio for this. Billy Hart was on drums when Pharoah Sanders recorded his album "Karma" with the legendary "The Creator Has a Master Plan" in New York in 1969, he puts his stamp of authenticity on a music full of bursting swing and groove. The dexterous and supple bass of Joris Teepe, who in Rashied Ali's band gained first-hand experience with one of the protagonists of the New York's own October revolution in Jazz, intertwines with Hart to form a solid yet flexible base over which Johannes Enders can develop his distinctively imaginative playing, wonderfully fluid yet with many points of controlled friction.

With his carefully crafted concept album entitled Vox Humana cellist Isang Enders presents a study in sound and the portrayal of a musical network of contacts. For his third release on the Berlin Classics label he has painstakingly chosen French works from four centuries and approached each of them in a very individual manner, setting himself and his audience the challenge of not simply listening, but of perceiving.Isang Enders sees Claude Debussy as the starting point for his approach. "The first time I played Debussy, my teacher at the time told me: 'use a lot of bow, minimum pressure, lots of air'. Yet Debussy gives precise instructions above each note as to how to play it. Creating one's own individual interpretation within such strict lines has to be based on timing and nuance. You have to open up your wardrobe, so to speak, seek out every colour and structure available. It's a laborious process." From Debussy and his nuances, Isang Enders then casts his gaze into the past and into the future.
