The nineteenth century was one in which musicians were very busy applying names and titles to older musical conventions of form, gure and function. Virtually all of the ‘titles’ applied to ‘Classical’ sonatas, symphonies and chamber music by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven come from a much later time. The music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries also did not escape this desire to name and codify.

Bach loved to collect and gather his best works in series, normally constituted by an elegant number of works. Six was a number he particularly prized: in fact, there are six English Suites, six French Suites, six Partitas for keyboard instruments, six works for unaccompanied solo violin (three Sonatas and three Partitas), six Brandenburg Concertos… to cite but a few examples. Each of the series cited above represents a true collection of masterpieces, and many of them represent one of the summits of the literature for a given instrument or ensemble. This is certainly the case with the six works for solo violin and with the six Suites for solo cello.Together, these Suites do indeed build an itinerary exploring all the moods and feelings of the human soul, and, possibly, they also constitute a musical “history of salvation”, from the original innocence of the first Suite to the resurrection of the D-major Suite, after experiencing suffering, joy, death and hope. Dance here becomes life, and, possibly, it also becomes prayer.

The so-called French Suites are actually no more French stylistically than either of Bach's other sets of keyboard suites, the English Suites and the Partitas. They are a fascinating mixture of movements of differing national styles, primarily French and Italian, lacking an introductory movement such as a prelude and conceived for performers without the virtuoso technique demanded in particular by the Partitas.In the sleeve note for his 1961 recording on L'Oiseau-Lyre, reprinted for this newly remastered reissue, Thurston Dart argues persuasively for the use of what was supposed to have been Bach's favourite keyboard instrument, the clavichord. Softer in volume, the intimate clavichord also allows for more dynamic variation than the harpsichord, as well as subtleties of tone.

Gavrilov is a pianist of outstanding virtuosity and power. In 1974 Melodiya recorded the 1st Tchaikovsky-concerto at the pricewinner concert of the Tchaikovsky competition together with a live solo recital. 1976 a studio recording of the 3rd Rachmaninoff concerto followed. From 1977 to 1989 he worked exclusively for EMI. From that time dates the legendary recording of the Chopin-Etudes and many other works, notably from Chopin, Scriabin, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and J.S. Bach. From 1991 to 1993 he recorded for Deutsche Grammophon, where Gavrilov, who among new works keeps his core repertoire, also duplicated some works already recorded for EMI. A number of projects with many Gavrilov-premieres was no more realized, Bach's English Suites, the complete Beethoven piano concerti, the Choral Fantasie and the Diabelli Variations, as well as more vague plans with works by Liszt (Etudes d'execution transcendante, Paganini-Etudes), Ravels complete works for piano solo and with orchestra, the piano concertos of Grieg und Schumann and Benjamin Brittens Golden Vanity. In 2009 a number of new DVD-recordings is planned for release.

Pianist Rochelle Sennet says that "Bach to Black represents my strong interest in performing repertoire by Black composers in combination with works of J.S. Bach. The suites included on this recording represent beauty, excellence, contrast, celebration of dance style, and dialogue." She has paired the English Suites of Bach with works by Black composers based on similarities in key, mode, rhythmic energy, and occasional disruption of tonal expectations. Dr. Rochelle Sennet has established herself as a well-known performer, teacher, and scholar. A graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory, the University of Michigan, and Texas Christian University, she received her DMA from the University of Illinois. She has been a prize winner in numerous competitions including the Kingsville International Piano competition, and the US Open Music Piano Concerto competition, among other. She is on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This is her fourth recording for Albany Records.
