Between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, Joseph Haydn was the most reputed musician in Europe, so it is not surprising that his works sounded in every corner of the continent. And as often happened, each place adapted the pieces to the available templates, reducing in some occasions but also expanding in others, and introducing modifications according to the local taste or the requirements of the new fashions, especially when the works in question arrived with some delay on the history clock. This new compact disc of the Baroque Orchestra of Seville shows how a symphony of Haydn - specifically, No. 44 "Funeral" - was transformed for an interpretation in the Cathedral of Seville.

A journey through seventeenth-century Rome, the rough and magnificent city where Caravaggio and Stradella lived. Strict counterpoint and learned polyphony in the lute and keyboard pieces by Kapsberger, Pasquini and Frescobaldi mingle with light dances and popular songs for guitar. Improvisation is the feature linking both sound-worlds: the high culture of church chapels and noble palaces, and the lore of streets and taverns. A careful study of the original sources guided the choices as to instruments and interpretation. According to historically informed practice, the celebrated Antidotum Tarantulæ and further early specimens of tarantella, as written down by the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher, are played on bagpipes, drums and guitars.

The prologue is a unique feature of early baroque opera: an opening scene where an allegorical figure enters the stage to prepare the audience for the musical drama to come. Thus Prologue is the musical introduction of Italian star soprano Francesca Aspromonte and her exclusive, long term engagement with Pentatone, promising great joy as well as drama in the years to come.

Another long-forgotten name takes his place in the huge library of Baroque composers published by Brilliant Classics thanks to spirited advocacy from a lively young Roman early-music group. The Milanese composer, impresario and singer Carlo Ambrogio Lonati (c.1645 – c.1712) made his name farther south, in Naples, as a singer and instrumentalist at the Royal Chapel. Some impression of his appearance may be inferred from the nickname widely bestowed upon him as ‘Il gobbo della regina’ (‘the queen’s hunchback’) during his period of service in the city to the expatriate Queen Christina of Sweden. Working in Rome and Genoa in close partnership with his fellow composer Alessandro Stradella, Lonati left Genoa in a hurry after the unexplained fatal stabbing of his friend in February 1682.
