En 1955, Elia Kazan réalisait « A l'Est d'Eden », film culte avec James Dean à fleur de peau, en pleine révolte contre son père. Aujourd'hui Costa Gavras, en hommage, renverse la perspective dans « Eden à l'Ouest ». Elias, jeune immigré clandestin, beau comme une statue grecque, traverse la Méditerrannée pour imaginer une nouvelle vie. Le réalisateur de « Amen » raconte un long voyage initiatique plein de métaphores. Le bateau rempli d'exilés, la fuite, l'arrivée sur la plage… dans un camp de nudistes et la fin, sombre, sur les Champs Elysées. Le jeune Elias, obsédé par Paris, avance toujours plus loin dans la désillusion. Le réalisateur grec a choisi un héros, Riccardo Scarmacio, pur, candide et presque muet. Mais c'est une fable cruelle. Préjugés des riches contre les pauvres, surtout lorsqu'ils sont étrangers, peur devant l'horizon rempli de policiers.

Elias (Riccardo Scarmacio), is not given a nationality, a move by the director to make a wider message with his film. We join Elias as he and his friend sit amongst hundreds of other illegal immigrants bound for France. Elias’ dream is to make it to Paris, which he has imagined as some sort of fairytale city in his mind, a place full of opportunity for a man such as himself. His plans are thrown into chaos when in the dead of night the men in charge of the boat dump the immigrants in the middle of the ocean, the water police fast approaching it is only the quick thinking Elias who jumps into the water and swims for land.
