This 6-CD set of "Villa-Lobos par lui-même" ("Villa Lobos performed by himself") presents the complete recordings made for Pathé between 1954 and 1958 and conducted by, or (in the case of the occasional Bachianas Brasileiras or Chôros scored for piano or duet) made under the supervision of the composer. As many of his contemporaries who made Paris their second home (Enescu comes to mind), Villa-Lobos shared his life between his native Brazil and Paris. Thus it has an important historical value.

DeMille had had his greatest success by remaking The Ten Commandmentsfor Paramount in 1956, and so he decided that his next film for the studio where he’d toiled for so many years would be a remake of his 1938 film of The Buccaneer, this time in Technicolor and VistaVision. But by 1958, having prepared the film, DeMille’s health was failing, so he asked Anthony Quinn to direct (Quinn was his son-in-law at the time) and longtime friend and associate Henry Wilcoxon to produce. A great cast was assembled, including Yul Brynner, Charles Boyer and Claire Bloom. Charlton Heston appeared as Andrew Jackson. Critics were cool to the film and it didn’t light up the box office, but it managed to snag one Oscar nomination (for Best Costumes). But looking back at it today, the film is very entertaining, looks incredible and has an absolutely stunning score by Elmer Bernstein.

Aaron Copland composed his Third Symphony on a commission from the Koussevitzky Music Foundation. He formulated initial plans for it in 1943, but actual work on the symphony was not begun until August, 1944, while he was staying in a little village in Mexico. The symphony was completed on September 29, 1946, barely in time for its premiere by Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony Orchestra on October 18 of that year. The score bears a dedication “To the memory of my dear friend Natalie Koussevitzky”.

On April 14, 1912, just before midnight, the unsinkable Titanic struck an iceberg. In less than three hours, it had plunged to the bottom of the sea, taking with it 1,500 of its 2,200 passengers. A Night to Remember depicts the ship’s final hours in an unforgettable rendering of Walter Lord’s book of the same name. Now, aficionados of this terrific film can compare it to the facts with Criterion’s special edition, which features screen-specific commentary by Titanic experts Don Lynch and Ken Marschall.

The four coronations of the twentieth century were enormous and extravagant. Replete with festive pageantry, these ceremonies were joyful celebrations of British music, employing tremendous forces. Choirs from across London and beyond were marshalled to provide a chorus of over 400 voices; a full-size symphony orchestra was squeezed into Westminster Abbey, whilst bands of fanfare trumpeters led the pomp and celebration.
