Fanny Hill

Early Dawg originally released on LP by Sugar Hill Records in 1980. This deluxe edition includes the original 16 tracks, combined with 13 previously unpublished tracks and David’s first recorded mandolin instrumental, “Mandolin King Rag” from the Even Dozen Jug Band LP, released on Elektra Records in 1964. Among these performances are the earliest recordings of Dawg’s first original compositions, “Cedar Hill”, “Fanny Hill”, “Opus 57”, “Opus 38” and his only banjo tune — “New York Ramble”, played by Winnie Winston and later renamed “Dawggy Mountain Breakdown”, the “Car Talk” theme recorded with Earl Scruggs. This music is presented chronologically, spanning the decade between 1963-1973 and features Del and Jerry McCoury, Bill Keith and many other incredible musicians who inspired the “early Dawg.”

This first volume of the collected original compositions of David “Dawg” Grisman is comprised of works written between 1963 and 1975, compiled chronologically in the order in which they were written. These performances were selected by the composer and include eight previously unissued tracks featuring David with Vassar Clements, Jerry Garcia, Bill Keith, Tony Rice, Frank Vignola, Clarence White and many others. In a March 1996 concert review, a Chicago Tribune critic described Grisman's "dawg" music as being among "the most important innovations in American music. Happily engaged to her handsome fiance, Charles, Fanny is soon hit with one misfortune after another until she is forced to become a prostitute to survive. This is the story, with many erotic asides, of her struggle to regain her pride in herself and find happiness in life once again.

Just a flat out stunning record. Any fan of the mandolin must spend some time at the house that David built. His self described "Dawg Music" is stylistically apart from the hard-core traditional folk and bluegrass sounds, but rather than renounce the roots of the instrument he manages to evolve it into something beautiful.
