Fantastic Planet

La Planète Sauvage est un film d'animation de science-fiction réalisé en 1973 par René Laloux sur un scénario écrit par René Laloux et Roland Topor d'après le roman Oms en série de Stefan Wul et coproduit par Les films Armorial (Paris), le Service de la recherche ORTF (Paris) et le Československý Filmexport (Prague). La Planète Sauvage est une adaptation à la fois fidèle et poétique du roman de Stefan Wul. Il obtient le Prix Spécial du jury à Cannes en 1973. Ceux qui ont vécu la sortie de ce film d'une grande poésie s'en souviennent comme d'un défi lancé aux cartoons américains, mais aussi comme un des premiers films d'animation adulte de l'époque. Représentant des humains ravalés au rang d'animaux domestiques des gigantesques Draags, Laloux met en scène une réflexion sur l'intelligence, la société, la politique et finalement sur la nature même de l'humanité.

Fantastic Planet is a 1973 animated science fiction film directed by René Laloux, production designed by Roland Topor, written by both of them and animated at Jiří Trnka Studio. The film was an international production between France and Czechoslovakia. It won the special jury prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. Fantastic Planet tells the story of “Oms”, human-like creatures, kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue giants called “Draags”. The story takes place on the Draags’ planet Ygam, where we follow our narrator, an Om called Terr, from infancy to adulthood. He manages to escape enslavement from a Draag learning device used to educate the savage Oms — and begins to organise an Om revolt. The imagination invested in the surreal creatures, music and sound design, and eerie landscapes, is immense and unforgettable.

Fantastic Planet was released on Aug. 13, 1996. The album earned a perfect 5-star score from Alternative Press who said the collection was able “to breathe life into the corpse of contemporary, guitar-driven rock” adding that the band was “willing to stretch the definition of both their instruments and their songs.” In the years that followed, the album’s stature has grown, becoming one of the era’s most influential and enduring rock records. " ‘Fantastic Planet’ is the almighty jam,” said Spin in an article announcing the band’s 2014 return, “a 17-track beast of guitar-antihero theatrics and studio-as-instrument bummer luxury.” Pitchfork dubbed the album “a sleeper classic” while Decibel penned a seven-page “Hall of Fame” feature on the album, saying “seriously, this is one of those albums that’s so perfect, the band almost had to implode after it’s release.”

In 2016, rock legends Failure (Ken Andrews – guitar, bass, lead vocals, Greg Edwards – bass, guitar, synths, vocals, Kellii Scott – drums) played their masterpiece album, Fantastic Planet, on a 20th anniversary tour across the U.S.
