Ensemble Marsyas performs music of the Baroque and Classical eras on period instruments at festivals all across Europe. On this recording of Johann Fasch's finest chamber music demonstrates why the man and his music were so appreciated in his own lifetime.

Due to a strong French influence at the beginning of the 18th century ‘bandes de hautbois’ were frequently present in the German courts. These instruments were initially intended for the performance of military and ceremonial music but soon began to take part in more courtly entertainments. A particular style of music was used in compositions for these instruments, as it was also in works for newer instruments, one of these being the oboe da caccia that Fasch employed as the solo instrument in a concerto that has only recently come to light.

Fasch while we played – an experience none of us will ever forget!

After Ensemble Diderot established itself as an internationally renowned ambassador for the masterful late repertoire of the ‘sonata a tre’, having given new polish to well-known major works of the literature as well as adding unknown treasures to the canon, it takes up in this programme the repertoire of the ‘sonata a quattro’. Owing to its appearance shortly before the emergence of the string quartet, the ‘sonata a quattro’ was largely disregarded, yet occupied an important intermediary role between the baroque and the early classical era.

Innovative instrumentation, unusual repertoire and an ensemble with a profound knowledge of historical performance practice makes this Irish Baroque Orchestra Linn debut unmissable.
