Punk combo Discount was formed in early 1995 by singer Alison Mosshart, guitarist Ryan Seagrist, bassist James, and drummer Bill Nesper, all junior high school students in the Vero Beach, FL, area. Despite their youth, the group began regularly gigging throughout Florida and soon self-released their debut cassette, Mom Lied to Me; a copy of the tape eventually found its way to Liquid Meat Records honcho Tim Lyman, and in 1996 the label issued the 7" EP Wonder Pulled Me Under followed by the full-length Ataxia's Alright Tonight.

MUSIC FICTION is the impressive, full-length debut by DJ/producer Rithma. After a series of well-received singles and a rep built up from his energetic sets at clubs and parties, Rithma makes good on his promise by dropping an album packed with mesmerizing rhythms, jazzy samples, low-key experimental collage and sampling, and a warmly inviting atmosphere. In fact, one of the more remarkable things about MUSIC FICTION is that, although it is a dance record in theory–the album draws heavily on house, acid jazz, and hip-hop elements–it is also quite mellow, and makes for an excellent headphone experience. So while the beats bump with funky, club-inflected bounce, the jazz snippets bring a heady touch of class and the ambient elements bathe it all in a relaxing glow. The combination works wonderfully, making this a noteworthy debut from a promising young electronica artist.

In the summer of 1982, in a cottage in the Bavarian forest a thirteen-year-old boy sits with his brother on the sofa and stares at the television. What he sees will transform his life. In rapid, revue-like sequences, young costumed people jump around in front of a painted background. They serenade tulips that are sparingly lit, twist and stretch under rubber sheets and with eyes taped over, iron on empty boards. Sometimes they just stand there, staring brazenly or absently into the camera, cryptic texts intoning through stiff mouths. The entire spectacle might be a direct transmission from Mars.

Elbow recorded their sixth album at Real World Studios, making the connection between themselves and Peter Gabriel plain. Much of this connection comes from the husky, subdued rasp of lead singer Guy Garvey, but the band on a whole favors a similar kind of accessible art rock where the textures are lucid yet elliptical while the songs are sturdy and melodic, wearing their accouterments well.
