Dark Side of the 80s is a stunning double-disc set spanning the mingling sounds of goth rock, indie rock, and alternative rock. Standout cuts from Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Cure, the Sisters of Mercy, and the Cult round out some of the collection's more blackish desire while tunes from the Pixies, Talk Talk, and Killing Joke highlight the frigid shifts within new wave and college rock.

A massive four-disc box that screams of industrial overkill as only Cleopatra Records can, Black Bible actually starts out quite well, with period classics from Bauhaus, Legendary Pink Dots, Ministry, Fields of the Nephilim, Tones on Tail and 1000 Homo DJs. By the second disc things go downhill, with newer tracks from Spahn Ranch, Big Electric Cat, Genitorturers and Electric Hellfire Club. That still leaves more than 30 tracks of middling-to-downright-obnoxious industrial music; the label even dredged up a Marilyn Manson track, a remix of "Transylvanian Concubine" by Rasputina.

As hinted at on Omnio, Norway's In The Woods has taken yet another step away from metal. First, they have broken with black metal entirely, and secondly, they have perhaps left the genre altogether in order to create a dark, swirling, heavy rock music all their own. Utilizing many of the same tactics they pioneered on Omnio, such as the use of a full string quartet alongside the band, In the Woods have taken further liberties in their instrumentation: sitars, gongs, drum loops, and keyboard programming, as well as a pedal steel guitar have been incorporated into their sound. On paper it sounds dreadful, in the grooves it is positively seductive and powerful…

I love this album, it is grating and crashing, progressive rock that is truly striving to be that. It brings together Poisoned Electrick Head with Fields Of The Nephilim and Ultravox in an unholy union that works brilliantly well. It is intense, and needs to be played very loudly to be fully appreciated, and as it swirls in and out of the mind it takes with it more than a few brain cells. It isn't all hard and fast, there is a very reflective and emotional song in "The Duncan Browne Song".

Focusing on the '80s, Cleopatra continues to document the history of gothic rock with this two-CD set. Progressing through the discs, the tracks get basically more obscure. Starting off is the pop-goth of the Cult ("Spirit Walker," similar to the Skeleton Family track), then on to the odd, desert goth of Theatre of Hate's "Do You Believe in the Westworld." Fields of Nephilim adds riff-rock goth (&"Blue Water"). With sound ready to open for Psychedelic Furs or Modern English is March Violets. Truly unique is the bouncy, glam goth of Danielle Dax' "Yummer Yummer Man." The obligatory track of '80's goth kings, Bauhaus, is "Passion of Lovers." Other big names in the genre found here include Christian Death, New Model Army, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Gene Loves Jezebel and Alien Sex Fiend. Lesser known is a catchy cut from Sexbeat, "Sweat.
