Parigi, 1964. Il famoso artista Alberto Giacometti si imbatte in un suo vecchio amico, il critico americano James Lord, e gli chiede di posare per un ritratto dal momento che reputa interessante il suo volto. Ci vorranno solo un paio di giorni di pose e, lusingato dalla richiesta, Lord accetta. I giorni però si trasformano in settimane e Lord ben presto si rende conto di come la sua vita sia stata dirottata dal genio sregolato di Giacometti, alle prese con l'ultimo dei suoi capolavori.
