One of the finest trombonists to emerge from the bebop era, Kai Winding was always to an extent overshadowed by J.J. Johnson, although they co-led one of the most popular jazz groups of the mid-'50s. Born in Denmark, Winding emigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was 12. He had short stints with the orchestras of Alvino Rey and Sonny Dunham, and played in a service band in the Coast Guard for three years. Winding's first burst of fame occurred during his year with Stan Kenton's Orchestra (1946-1947), during which his phrasing influenced and was adopted by the other trombonists, leading to a permanent change in the Kenton sound. He also participated in some early bop sessions, played with Tadd Dameron (1948-1949), and was on one of the Miles Davis' nonet's famous recording sessions…

HDTT is pleased to present the FIRST RELEASE of these never-before-heard alternate takes of songs on Judy Garland’s well-loved 1956 Capitol album entitled Judy…. After the very successful release of Garland’s first Capitol album in 1955, immediately following a 90-minute CBS television special, the following year it was decided to again pair a Capitol album release with a CBS TV special. This time, the TV show would employ the music from Garland’s second Capitol album, “Judy,” with no separate orchestra for the show itself. In this half-hour show, which aired live on April 8, 1956, Garland performed some songs live to pre-recorded orchestral tracks from the Capitol recording sessions and lip-sync’ed other songs to the pre-existing Capitol recordings that included the vocals…. This HDTT release presents twelve recordings from the original March sessions…

Few pop singers of the 20th century had a greater impact on how vocalists approached their craft than Bing Crosby. Bing was one of the first singers to understand how to use the microphone to his advantage, and his phrasing brought jazz and blues influences into the mainstream in a new way, while maintaining an infectious, upbeat, easygoing vocal personality. In 1956, Crosby recorded the album Songs I Wish I Had Sung the First Time Around…, in which he paid homage to some of his favorite singers by interpreting their signature songs, including Al Jolson ("April Showers"), Nat King Cole ("Mona Lisa"), Louis Armstrong ("Ain't Misbehavin'"), the Mills Brothers ("Paper Doll"), Billy Eckstine ("Prisoner of Love"), and even his frequent comic foil Bob Hope ("Thanks for the Memory"). In 2014 the album was reissued in an expanded edition, featuring an additional ten songs with Crosby covering a handful of pop standards, as well as unreleased session outtakes.
