Oscar Peterson appeared on hundreds of recordings produced by Norman Granz, though most of his early trio dates for Mercury and Clef were overlooked for CD reissue until the release of this thorough seven-disc compilation by Mosaic in 2008. It still represents only a portion of the pianist's considerable output for the two labels between 1951 and 1953. This collection was put together as a result of laborious detective work, assembling nine different sessions from tape masters and second generation reels, 78s, EPs and LPs, some of which came from collectors and libraries, while also including eight previously unissued performances…

Genre: Jazz | Label: TDK Uk Ltd | Copy: Untouched | Release Date: 31 May 2004 | Runtime: 72 min. | 2,69 GB (DVD5)

This DVD highlights the advantages perfectly: there are loads of camera angles, and the cutting between long views and close ups of Jamal's facial expressions and hand gestures to the others, Heard's fingering and Israel's cymbals really adds to the live jazz experience.
A sorely underexposed figure and a major influence on Miles Davis, pianist Ahmad Jamal isn't generally ranked among the all-time giants of jazz, but he impressed fellow musicians and record buyers alike with his innovative, minimalist approach.

David Baker Trio - Minus Piano (2019)  Music

"Minus Piano" attempts to bridge two seemingly separate worlds of jazz history in a modern context. One of the beautiful things about modern jazz is that it breaks down barriers more than the music ever did prior— one of these divisions is the piano trio tradition and the chord-less trio tradition. David Baker (bass) forms a trio with Joel Harris (tenor) and Sarute Wijitwechakarn (drums) to honor the seat they leave empty: piano. Attempting to capture or reinvent characteristics of each honored pianist, the trio cleverly designs arrangements that feel fresh and modern, personal, and even daring, but at the same time, they feel connected to the music's rich history. "Minus Piano" offers a tip of the hat to some of the greatest: Red Garland, Oscar Peterson, Count Basie, Ray Charles, McCoy Tyner, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk. The debut album for the David Baker Trio promises to inspire just as the sources did for its members.

[…] This live CD documents a pair of concerts with guitarist Ulf Wakenius (who also worked with Peterson) and drummer Jonas Johansen, the first five tracks from 1999 and the last six from Pedersen's final recorded concert in March 2005, just a few weeks before his sudden death from a heart attack. […] Both concerts are intimately recorded and this is easily one of Niels Pedersen's best CDs as a leader. ~Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Is a highly expressive, improvisational trio of guitar, piano and drums. It features Graydon Cramer on drums, Jeff Presslaff on piano and Keith Price on guitar. The name refers literally and metaphorically to its wide reach — from Manitoba to Auckland, and from detailed composition to freewheeling blowing.

This set was also issued as two separate LPs under John Surman’s name, Vogue VJD 505/1 and VJD 505/2. Rare bit of free jazz by this trio of British players from the early 70′s. The music is very intense, without any of the noodling that sometimes ruins Brit sessions from the time. Surman plays baritone, soprano, and bass clarinet, and he really blows like mad in some passages. The sound quality of this album is stunning! In the autumn of 1969, John Surman decided to make a break and joined forces with Barre Phillips and Stu Martin, to form a group they called The Trio. Phillips had a varied background, having worked as a sideman with Archie Shepp, Jimmy Giuffre and George Russell, as well as performing solo in Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic.

It‘s a real pleasure for me to have in my hands a young and sincere venture born of a musician like Bernat Font, who expresses his art, from the foundations of Afro-American Musical Classicism, with such freshness and character. Throughout the 11 tracks, nine of which are the offspring of lined paper and the restless pen of the author, presented to us one after the other in a natural and fitting pantone, these three impassioned jazzmen introduce their first record entitled “The Shout”. With the deep roots of the blues, and the regular swing beat, always staying true to the feeling, their musical project takes us on a journey through the first half of the last century. From ragtime to the classic swing trio, passing by Boogie Woogie, Fats Waller and Art Tatum, with a nod in the direction of Oscar Peterson and Count Basie, would be the most concise and accurate way of describing their musical influences and philosophy. And so, having done their homework well, the music that filters out of this recording, made only days before Bernat’s 21st birthday, is fluid and diverse as you will hear in Blues 4 Rhene. The theme is soft and seductive and its development is embellished with original changes in tone and metre that demonstrate a notable stylistic plurality.

There are many flattering clichés used to describe great musicians with a lifetime in service of jazz. Danish bassist Hugo Rasmussen is such a musician. Ben Webster said, “Where U go, I go!” He is my bass-man number one!” Dexter Gordon said, “This is Copenheaven for bass players. With Hugo I feel safe – for hours!” The young drummer from New York, R.J. Miller, is equally enthusiastic. “To play with Hugo has confirmed in me the way of playing lightly and hip. He is incredible.” “Well” says Hugo, “Keep in mind that back in the 1960’s, even when I was at my best, I was never more than number two.

Ron Carter's recordings as a leader have varied in shape and style, from his contemporary commercial CTI recordings, his Milestone LP's emphasizing the piccolo bass, more symphonic efforts, and straight-ahead efforts such as this one. With the extraordinary Kenny Barron at the piano and drummer Lewis Nash, Carter plays standards and four of his originals that all fall snugly into the modern mainstream of jazz. It's a relatively laid-back affair, as Barron's potential energy is for the most part subdued, while Nash and Carter lock in on a cooperative mindset. In lieu of balance, the pianist tenderly wafts through a ballad version of "My Foolish Heart," leads out quaintly on "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," and springs along happily during the Randy Weston evergreen "Hi-Fly"…
